Dear Group members,
We have a Windows machine available for running Word, Powerpoint, etc.
and all those pesky Windows-only programs. there is a Wiki page about it
(how to login, etc.)
http://aspuru.chem.harvard.edu:8080/mediawiki/index.php/Windows_Computer_no…
The basic info is that you can login as easily as using the rdesktop
command on any one of our Linux boxes.
I have created an administrator account (called group, James: The
password is the same that you know) where one can add users.
I added an account for the following people, any others that want to use
it and I forgot, please e-mail James about creating an account.
The password for the initially created accounts is 06fgjh06 and you
should change it immediately.

Dear all,
There is a group meeting on Friday at 10.00 AM. We will hear from Sergio
and Jen, from U. Mass Amherst talk to us about polymers and how we can
help the development of fuel cells using theoretical chemistry.
Check it out:

Dear all,
Masoud Mohseni, who is going to join our group in October as a
postdoctoral researcher is going to talk this Friday at 4 PM at Harvard.
Please forward to anybody interested.

Direct Characterization of Quantum Dynamics
The characterization of quantum dynamics is a fundamental task in
quantum mechanics, that can be accomplished via quantum process
tomography (QPT). We present a general theory for direct and complete
characterization of quantum dynamics of an open quantum system. In
contrast to all known QPT schemes, our method relies on
error-detection techniques and does not require any quantum state
tomography. By analysis of the number of necessary experimental
configurations and quantum operations in a given Hilbert space, we
demonstrate that our approach is more efficient than all existing QPT
schemes. We also provide a discussion of its possible physical
realizations and illustrate its advantage in partial characterization
of quantum dynamics. Specifically, we demonstrate that our scheme can
be efficiently used for Hamiltonian identification, and also for
simultaneous determination of both the relaxation time T1 and
dephasing time T2.

Dear group members,
Our group has been invited to participate in the MIT quantum computing
group meetings. I forward the invitation of Eddie Farhi for this
Wednesday, but in general, we will be able to attend and learn more
about the topic with really good people (Eddie Farhi, Peter Shor, Isaac
Chuang, etc.)
Peter Shor will be teaching Quantum Computation I for graduate students
at MIT next semester Tue and Thursdays at 1.00 PM before my QM class
(hint, hint).
Yours,
Alan

Dear group,
Cheryl sent this e-mail about possesions of older students and graduate
students. I think that every one of you is just moving in and getting
started so if you are around, this is a great opportunity to obtain
furniture, kitchen stuff, etc. at close-to-zero prices!

Dear all,
I have registered Kinga Partyka, Ivan Tubert, James Whitfield, Alejandro
Perdomo and myself to attend to the conference:
http://www.deas.harvard.edu/quantum/index.html
I just found out about this conference on Sunday, and managed to
late-register everybody free of charge. I hope you can stop and get your
badge, and attend to as many talks as your schedule and interests
permit.
On other news, I will be away August 17-23 on a Mexico (talk) and
Vancouver (D-Wave) trip. I expect to be available by e-mail.
Yours,
Alan

Dear all,
Here is the newsletter of the quantum information group of APS. If you
are an APS member, it is free to become a member, and for you students
(Kinga, James, Ivan and Alejandro), I think that being a student member
of APS is free, so I would recommend you to become one. Let me know if
that is not the case (free membership for students).
