Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, December 5, 2007; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Martin Wattenberg, Research Staff Member, IBM
Fernanda Viegas, Research Staff Member, IBM
Seminar Title: Many Eyes: Democratizing Visualization
Abstract: Data visualization has historically been accessible only
to the elite in academia, business, and government. To democratize
visualization, we have built Many Eyes, a web site where people
upload their data, create interactive visualizations, and carry on
conversations. The goal is a social style of data analysis in which
visualizations spur discussion and collaboration. We present Many
Eyes, describe patterns of usage on the site, and discuss what those
patterns suggest about the future of visualization.

Digital Humanities Talk Series, 2007-2008
Over the coming six months, eight invited guest speakers from outside
Harvard will present work they are conducting in the digital humanities.
The first two speakers will be presenting on Monday, December 3 and
Tuesday, December 4th.
Speaker:
David Rumsey; President of Cartography Associates, Chairman of Luna
Imaging, Inc.
When:
Monday, December 3, 2007; 4:00pm
Where:
Barker Center for the Humanities, Thompson Room
Talk Title:
Giving Maps a Second Life with Digital Technologies
Abstract: David Rumsey will show how his increasing use of digital
technologies and the Internet over the past decade has transformed
his work as a historical map scholar and collector. Using imaging
software, GIS, and popular applications like Google Earth and Second
Life, Rumsey has given new life to old maps, both in their
dissemination and our ability to analyze and understand them, thereby
unlocking the information held in maps for use in a wide range of
disciplines. He will discuss and demonstrate how he offers these
software tools and a growing number of digitized maps themselves on
his free public online map library at www.davidrumsey.com
---------------------
Speaker:
Jason Stoddard, Founder and Managing Partner/Interactive for Centric.com
When:
Tuesday, December 4, 2007; 9:00am
Where:
CGIS S250
Talk Title:
Virtual Worlds: A New Enabler for Digital Humanities
Abstract: In virtual worlds like Second Life, educators and
individuals are building replicas of monuments such as the San
Francesco Assisi, teaching high-level Chinese to high-school
students using gaming and roleplaying techniques, performing dozens
of concerts and stageplays every week, creating unique experiences
that bring art such as Van Gogh's Starry Night to life, building
literature-based worlds such as Dante's Inferno, and creating their
own alternate realities such as Caledon and the Wastelands. Jason
Stoddard explores some of the most engaging of these virtual places,
and discusses how virtual worlds enable digital humanities with
immersive experiences, and outlines some of the virtual world
platforms available, including emerging open-source models.

Cheers,
Alan
