IIC Colloquium: Multimillion-Atom Simulations of Materials Under
Extreme Conditions
Location: 60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Date: Wednesday, November 5, 2008
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Speaker:
Priya Vashishta (Director, Collaboratory for Advanced Computing and
Simulations (CACS), University of Southern California; Professor,
Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Chemical Engineering & Materials
Science, and Computer Science)
Abstract:
Advanced materials and devices with nanoscale grains and features are
being developed to achieve higher strength and toughness in ceramic
materials and greater speeds in electronic devices. How can the
behavior of these systems be modeled? Below 100 nanometers, continuum
descriptions of materials and devices must be supplemented by
atomistic descriptions. Current state-of-the-art atomistic simulations
involve 10 million to 1 billion atoms. This talk will discuss the
molecular-dynamics simulations used to study critical issues in the
area of structural and dynamical correlations, as well as reactive
processes in nanostructured materials under extreme conditions.

Dear Group,
Since it is the last Friday of the month, group meeting will not be held in
the Division Room. Instead, Naito 030 is reserved from 1:30-3pm tomorrow.
Joel will be presenting.
Thanks,
Anna
P.S. The location is indicated in the event details in the Group Meeting
Calendar.

Subject: Lunch with Prof. Barron, Oct. 30th
To: joelyuen(a)fas.harvard.edu
Dear Joel,
Prof. Barron is coming to visit us tomorrow, and I am organizing lunch
with him at faculty club around noon. He is a theorist in Glasgow University
mainly involved in optical activity theories. (

)
If you, or your labmates are interested in coming with him for the meal,
let me know and we will gather in the hall of Mallinckrodt, first floor at
12:15pm, Oct. 30th.
thanks!
best,
Yiqiao

Dear People in the Group that do computer programming:
Today at 3pm there is a seminar on Intellectual Property. Want to know your
rights? How to do collaborations without getting into IP problems? This is
the seminar.
You have to register!
http://iic.harvard.edu/iic-interactive-seminar-intellectual-property-protec…
Scientists and engineers who are developing new software tools face a range
of issues and options as they prepare to release their work to the
community. The commercial value of much academic and research software may
not be immediately apparent. Nevertheless it represents a form of
intellectual property that should be protected with mechanisms that protect
the creator's rights and encourage the highest and best use of the software.
The IIC presents this workshop-style seminar to inform discussions of these
issues within the research community.
Start: 10/29/2008 - 15:00
End: 10/29/2008 - 17:00
Advance registration is requested
Location:
60 Oxford Street, Room 311
I'm planning to go.

*IIC Interactive Seminar: Intellectual Property Protection for Software*
Date: Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Time: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Location: 60 Oxford Street, Room 311
Note: Advance registration is requested. To register, please click here.
Abstract:
Scientists and engineers who are developing new software tools face a range
of issues and options as they prepare to release their work to the
community. The commercial value of much academic and research software may
not be immediately apparent. Nevertheless it represents a form of
intellectual property that should be protected with mechanisms that protect
the creator's rights and encourage the highest and best use of the software.
The IIC presents this workshop-style seminar to inform discussions of these
issues within the research community.
Our presenter, Keith Bostic, is a veteran developer whose experience
includes founding an Open Source software startup. He will open the seminar
with a 30-minute introduction to methods of protecting the intellectual
property embodied in software.
Keith's introduction will be followed by discussion of general topics
including:
- An introduction to copyrights, patents, trade secrets and trademarks
- The applicability of intellectual property protection to software
- The advantages and disadvantages of Open Source licensing
Participants are welcome to submit or pose additional discussion questions.
Among those attending will be a representative of Harvard's Office of
Technology Development.
The workshop format will be as follows:
- 3:00 Introduction
- 3:10-3:40 Opening presentation
- 3:40-4:00 Questions
- 4:00-4:05 Break
- 4:05-4:50 Moderated discussion of general and specific issues
- 4:50-5:00 Wrap-up
