FROM: Dan Schrag, Director

DATE: September 26, 2008
SUBJECT: New Graduate Consortium on Energy and Environment
I am delighted to announce the launch of the* Graduate Consortium on Energy
and Environment*, a new interdisciplinary training opportunity for doctoral
students interested in energy issues. The Consortium will foster a new
community of students who will be well versed in the broad, interconnected
issues of energy and environment while maintaining their focus in their
primary discipline.
Starting in the Spring 2009 semester, the Consortium will admit its first
cohort of students, who will enroll in a suite of new courses that
constitute the program requirements. Mike Aziz of SEAS will offer a course
on energy technology and energy systems; Bill Hogan and Erich Muehlegger of
the Kennedy School will co-teach a course on energy policy; and in Fall 2009
I will offer a course on energy consequences. Students will also be
required to participate in a weekly reading seminar that will provide an
overview of the energy field from a wide range of perspectives, and will be
led by faculty members from around the university. We hope your department
will consider whether one or more of these new courses might satisfy
elective requirements for students in your program. Students enrolled in
the Consortium will be expected to fulfill all the requirements for the
Ph.D. in their home department or program and must have the approval of
their advisers to apply.
Students accepted into the Consortium will be eligible to apply for graduate
fellowships provided by the Center for the Environment, which will
coordinate with the GSAS on fellowship decisions. Consortium students will
also be eligible to receive up to $1,000 to attend conferences or other
professional activities during their time in the program.
The attached brochure offers more information on the Consortium and details
on how to apply. The deadline for applications is October 31st with a
second application cycle in May 2009.
We will be sending information to graduate students early next week. Please
let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

Dear Group
As you know we are about to start with the kickoff meeting for the Clean
Energy Project this weekend. As part of this, we have started to run jobs
for the World Community Grid. Therefore, we need you to install, sign in and
run these projects when your computers are idle.
If you are installing it on a linux x86-64 computer (the desktops you all
have), please download the file attached, save it to a name Folder, and then
on the terminal type:
cd new_folder
sh boinc_6.2.15_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh
To run it, just type what is instructed to you.
You will need to register at the World Community Grid (
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/viewRegister.do) and then, please join
the Harvard Chemistry team. After that, you can join the World Community
Grid project on the Boinc GUI.
Please let Sigi, Leslie or me know if there's any problems.
If you want to download Boinc for windows, Mac, or a x86 linux, I recommend
you download it from the WCG website.
Thanks for the help!

Dear Group,
I'd like to announce some protocol when scheduling meetings w/ Alan. This
should make the process more efficient for all.
1) Email me with your preferred date(s) & time(s). Remember that Thu
afternoons and Fridays are best for Alan this Fall. Please mention what
it's about, e.g., x paper or y project, so I can note this for Alan to see.
2a) If a time works, I will send you a Google Calendar event invitation w/
specific date&time, and possibly a short note or question in the description
field. *You must confirm by accepting the invitation*, or else I may need
to give the time slot to someone who's waiting for a spot.
2b) If I can't fit you in based on your parameters, I will reply to your
email and we can work from there.
3) Once the meeting event is confirmed, any changes will happen via Google
Calendar notification emails, i.e., if Alan needs to cancel/reschedule, I
will delete the event or send a revised invitation.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Best,
Anna

THE SCIENTIST AS CITIZEN
A three-part workshop on the communication of science for graduate students
in the natural sciences and engineering
For years, people have bemoaned the gulf of incomprehension between
technical elites and the lay public. Today this gulf is wider than ever.
And, as more and more political decisions hinge on matters of science and
technology, it has big implications for the functioning of democracy.
To address this problem, the Harvard University Center for the Environment
is offering a three-part workshop (or short course) on communicating science
for graduate students and post-docs pursuing a career in engineering and
natural sciences. The workshop will be offered four times this fall
semester.
The course has two aims. The first goal is to remind scientists that their
obligations extend beyond research and publication in the scholarly
literature – they have an affirmative obligation as citizens to participate
in our democracy and speak out on matters of public importance, especially
when the debate hinges on scientific information. Its second goal is to
offer practical suggestions for communicating their ideas more effectively.
It has three parts:
1: The scientist/engineer as source – dealing with the public, talking to
the news media.
2: The scientist/engineer as writer – writing letters and essays for the
op-ed pages, putting science online, writing articles and books for a lay
audience.
3: The scientist/engineer as expert – translating scientific knowledge or
engineering expertise into useful policy advice or other expert guidance.
INSTRUCTOR: Cornelia Dean
Cory Dean is a science writer and former science editor of The New York
Times and a lecturer in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at
Harvard.
