Courtesy of Jon Welch, we now have a lot of oranges, grapefruits, and
tangerines in the lounge for any who'd like to claim them. Enjoy!

Dear Group,
Sarah gave me the holiday cards for our custodians Elsa and Marie. Elsa is
flying out to El Salvador, so today is her last day of work before she
takes off. This is your last chance to sign her card as I plan to give it
to her at 2pm. By the way, someone wrote "Thanks for" on her card and did
not finish writing their thought. Nice job. [?]
Please also sign Marie's card if you haven't already.
Last thing, Leslie used to coordinate collecting money from the group to
buy a nice gift for Elsa. I took this over last year but didn't have the
time to coordinate with the entire group. So last year, "we" got her a
gift card and box of chocolates. Unexpectedly, Elsa asked me who donated
money so she could personally thank them, and of course, I didn't know what
to say. To avoid another awkward moment, I am telling you now that "we"
got her a gift card and chocolates, plus the beautiful card that Sarah got,
as a token of appreciation from the Aspuru-Guzik group. "We" also got a
similar gift of appreciation for Marie. Now you can nod and smile if Elsa
or Marie says anything instead of feel confused. [?]
Last last thing, many thanks to Sarah and Stephanie for coordinating
signing of cards this year. [?]
Best,
Anna

Dear friends,
As 2011 comes to a close, IACS is preparing a packed week of January workshops, seminars and other activities to launch the new year and prepare students for spring courses. All events are free and open to the public and will take place in Maxwell Dworkin. We hope you'll join us during ComputeFest!
A full and updated ComputeFest calendar is online at https://iacs.seas.harvard.edu/events/computational-science-ventures, with links to registration pages. (Advance registration is necessary for some events.) On our website you can sign up for:
-- THE FUTURE OF COMPUTATION IN SCIENCE: A MINI-SYMPOSIUM. Experts from IBM, Google, NVIDIA, Intel and AstraZeneca will offer perspectives on the future of computational science. The Jan. 13 panel discussion will be hosted by SEAS Dean Cherry A. Murray and moderated by IACS Director Efthimios Kaxiras.
-- COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS WORKSHOPS. Each morning, Jan. 17-20, explore Matlab, Mathematica, R or Python in workshops offered by MathWorks, Wolfram Research, SEAS faculty and SEAS Academic Computing. (Registration for Matlab sessions will be through MathWorks.)
-- NETWORKING/PEER-HELP SESSIONS. After each morning session, sign up for a hands-on "Birds of a Feather" session to explore tools with others who share your interest. Bring your laptop and enjoy a light lunch.
-- COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE VENTURES (https://iacs.seas.harvard.edu/events/computational-science-ventures) will be a special afternoon seminar series featuring entrepreneurs who have merged science and computing to create new products and services. Organized and moderated by Alexander Wissner-Gross. Among the speakers will be Dean Kamen and Stephen Wolfram.
Special student activities during this year's ComputeFest include the IACS Computational Challenge (https://iacs.seas.harvard.edu/student-activities/iacs-challenge-2012), a team competition in which students will try to optimize delivery of vital services after a natural disaster. Interested students should sign up *before* the winter recess.
********
Other opportunities to burnish your computational skills at Harvard in January include these offerings for students:
-- "Programming Statistical Models with Zelig 4," a short course offered by IQSS, afternoons Jan. 17-20. See http://www.iq.harvard.edu/events/node/2710
-- "Spatial Thinking and Analysis with GIS," a workshop offered by CGA, Jan. 17-20. CGA also offers a Winter GIS Institute Jan. 3-13. See http://gis.harvard.edu
********
Seminars will resume in February. Best wishes for the new year from IACS!

Hey group!
I just learned that the MathWorks people who develop MATLAB are hosting a
series of eight sessions at MIT during the week of January 23. The
sessions look really interesting for anyone who does MATLAB work. The
topics for the eight sessions are:
Parallel Computing with MATLAB
Advanced Graphics and Visualization in MATLAB
Mathematical Modeling with MATLAB
Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming in MATLAB
Computer Vision with MATLAB
Applied Curve Fitting with MATLAB
How Basic Communications Theory Turns into a 4G Wireless System Model in
MATLAB
Introduction to MATLAB: Problem Solving and Programming
You can register for any of these sessions on the website:
http://www.mathworks.com/company/events/seminars/mit_iap12/index.html
Dates and times are listed for each session on that website.
Just thought this might be useful!
Cheers,
Jacob
Hi Quanta
We agreed to meet on Monday to hear reports from those who went to QIP. I suggest noon and I will order pizza. Let me know if you will be there so I know how much to get. We will meet in 6C 442.

Dear group members,
Our common hard disk on Odyssey is running full once again and was already at 100% capacity last night. Just to be perfectly clear what that means:
All calculations started on Odyssey would crash or fail to transmit data back to the submit directory!
I've moved few GB of my data and we are currently at merely 99% usage but this is obviously only a temporary relief. I would like to ask everyone invested in calculations on Odyssey to pitch in and to (temporarily) move some of their data from past calculations to their local desktop computers.
Useful tip:
du -sh command run in a given directory shows the aggregated usage of all its subdirectories in human-readable format
Also, we should perhaps discuss an archiving solution for the (considerable) amount of data from the members of the group who have already left.
Best,
Dmitrij
