Subject: Information for faculty and staff regarding CCB mailing lists
To: lotto@chemistry.harvard.edu

We maintain several e-mail lists for use by faculty and staff for communicating with our community.  Some of these lists are centrally-managed are also controlled use, and we try to reserve their use for official departmental communication.  All known e-mail addresses for faculty and staff in CCB are authorized to use these lists.  The web page at http://www.chem.harvard.edu/admin/mailing_lists.php provides a summary of these lists and aliases that combine lists for larger audiences, and documents the intended purpose of each.

The complexity of these aliases is a result of the evolution of a set of lists meant to meet the combined needs of our community.  I would like to encourage those who  send e-mail to our community to review this page and invite any / all questions about the use of these lists.  Please note that "all@chemistry.harvard.edu" is sent to faculty, visiting scholars, staff, and chemlist.  It does not use the comprehensive but limited access lists of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows cited above.  Messages that originate from faculty or staff that MUST be delivered to everyone in the community should be sent to "true_all@chemistry.harvard.edu."

If you use these lists,  we ask that you put your own e-mail address in the "To:" address field and use the "bcc:" field to list the actual intended destination, as this message illustrates.  In this manner, the list names themselves do not get advertised as widely which helps to limit the amount of unwanted traffic to them.

The following information was additionally sent to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows:

CCB maintains several mailing lists to enable our community to keep in touch.  Some of these lists are centrally-managed and we try to reserve their use for official departmental communications and so honor those people who would prefer to NOT receive announcements of a more general or elective nature.  This message was sent to all known postdoc and graduate student e-mail addresses by using these lists.

We also host "chemlist," a self-maintained mailing list for all who would like to send or receive e-mail announcements of general interest to the CCB community.  To sign up for chemlist, simply visit the web page at http://chem.harvard.edu/mailman/listinfo/chemlist and complete the form.  Once a member, you will also be able to view an archive of the messages that have been sent to this list, manage your subscription options, or unsubscribe if you change your mind about being a member.   You must be subscribed to chemlist to send mail to the list.
