Dear colleagues,
I wanted to let you all know about some renovations that will be taking
place at Fung Library this summer, and how the work might affect library
services. In order to create more office space, CGIS will be sealing off
the openings between the triangular wooden pillars across from the
circulation desk. This will mean there will no longer be any direct
access from Fung to what is now the copier/scanner/microfilm reader
room, the Harvard-MIT Data Center, the meeting rooms, or the Computer
Training Lab. The copier, scanner and microfilm reader will eventually
be moved to a newly created location at the end of the stacks room. They
will also be doing work in the concourse-level lobby to create new
office space there. All of this is scheduled to be completed by
September 9.
We have just learned that by the end of next week, construction will
start on a temporary barrier at the wooden pillars, which will
immediately close off access to HMDC and the copier and scanner room. We
are hoping to find an interim location for either the scanner or the
copier but we do not yet know if this is possible.
We hope very much that all of this work will not result in any loss of
access to library materials over the course of the summer. We have been
told that they will try to perform the most disruptive work outside of
the library's regular business hours, but it seems likely that noise,
fumes and other construction-related disturbances will at times result
in a less-than ideal atmosphere to study or do research in Fung.
I apologize in advance for the inconvenience this all represents. We
will try to keep everyone apprised of developments through signs,
notices, email and other channels. If you know of anyone who is planning
to come to Fung to do research this summer, please feel free to forward
this email to them.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know:

In this exhilarating narrative history, prize-winning historian Timothy Snyder offers an indelible portrait of an aristocrat
whose life personifies the wrenching upheavals of the first half of the twentieth century, as the rule of empire gave way to the new politics of nationalism.
