We regret to report that Marshall D. Shulman died
on June
21. For those who missed his obituary in the New York
Times on June 23, he was 91. Professor Shulman was in the
first class of the Russian Institute of Columbia University,
where he also earned his doctorate. He became associate director of the
Russian Research
Center at Harvard
University in 1954, a position
he held
until 1961 when he joined the faculty at the Fletcher School of Law and
Diplomacy at Tufts
University.
Subsequently
he returned to Columbia
as director of the Russian Institute, which became endowed as the
Harriman
Institute under his tenure. He continued his association with the
Russian Research
(now Davis) Center, serving for many years on the Center’s visiting
committee
as well as co-chairing the annual Arden House conferences sponsored by
both Harvard
and Columbia.
Shulman
also served in the U.S.
government as the principal adviser on Soviet affairs to Secretary of
State
Cyrus Vance from 1977 to 1980.
