Hi everyone,
I'll give you an overview from our first lab meeting today. We discussed that the lab meetings will be of an informal nature; we envision them as being a time to talk about lab issues, make better friends with one another, and learn something about psychology and physiology. It's the perfect time to talk about things like scheduling, physioscoring, and videocoding because they are activities that need to be highly organized and synchronized. There will be the option to read a book or article and discuss it. Also, the thesis students could present their research while we pummel them with questions (for practice!!) The topics should be relative to what's going on in the lab at the time, so it brings us to the next question...what's going on in the lab right now? Well, this week has been all about training. You should have attending a training session in the three p's (okay, 2 p's and 1 v) 1)physioscoring 2)videocoding 3)physiohookup. By the end of this week we will hopefully have your regularly scheduled hours all set so for next week you can come in for those regularly scheduled hours to work on the lab tasks (see the three p's, above) that so desperately need to get finished. By the middle of next week you'll have the lab schedule and an overview of studies that we're running. You'll have specific experimenter/operator/evaluator training. Finally, the 2nd week of October we'll start running participants from the psychology study pool.
Here is a tentative schedule/possible topics for the next few lab meetings:
Week 1: (Spent getting to know the 3 p's, specific training) Go over policies, contact information, schedules (for the last time!), training. Mostly we'll talk about how we can be consistent in scoring the physio data and video tapes.
Week 2: (Running studies) Scheduling and recruiting participants
Week 3: Let's regroup at that point.
Enthusiasm is contagious!

Hi everyone,
Apparently the group list emails have not been getting to everyone. We
had our first lab meeting tonight at 5pm, and I'm sorry that not
everyone knew about it! Notice about it was sent in an email that also
had important information about training. Don't worry if you missed the
meeting or the training, but hopefully you can make the training
sessions later this week. Please tell me if you receive this message. A
few important messages will follow.

Hey everyone,
Just a reminder that the first lab meeting is tonight, and we're going
to have to move it just 15 minutes from 5 to 5:15pm because of the
colloquium speaker from 4-5:15pm. There will be VARIOUS kinds of chips
and dips to hold you over until dinner :-) .

Hi everyone,
This is a great week to work in the lab--it's quiet, relaxed, laid back.
And we could use your help, especially with physioscoring. If you have
been trained in physioscoring or videocoding please write me back so we
can schedule a time for you to come in n' help--just a few hours would
be so helpful.
Thanks,
Carrigan
Hi everyone,
Sorry for these long lists, but right now there's a lot to do!
A) After looking at the schedules I have so far, it looks like our weekly lab meetings will be on MONDAYS FROM 10-11AM. Since this is short notice, and because I still haven't heard from some people about their schedules, next week we'll hold our first lab meeting in the conference room next to my office on WEDNESDAY AT 5PM. Please everyone be there, but contact me in advance if you can't make it because of prior arrangements. mmmmmm chips and dip will be served!
B) Everyone should learn how to 1)apply sensors for physiological hookup 2)score physiological data in mindware 3)videocode. Looking at the schedules I have set up a number of training sessions for next week. Try to go to one of everything (even if it's just a refresher, it's important that we're all at "square one") unless you are one of the people who were working in the lab this summer. This is what I have so far:
Monday 2pm-PHYSIOSCORING BP
Tuesday 4pm-PHYSIOLOGICAL HOOKUP
Wednesday 10am-VIDEOCODING
Thursday 3pm-PHYSIOSCORING BP
4pm-VIDEOCODING
Friday 9am-PHYSIOCODING BP
10am-VIDEOCODING
11am-PHYSIOSCORING BP
12pm-PHYSIOLOGICAL HOOKUP
You DONT have to go to all of these, just go to one of each of the things you haven't done training with me before. If these times don't work for you, let me know and we'll touch base.
C) If you haven't already sent me a schedule of times that you have class/other regularly scheduled extracurriculars/etc. and your phone number (cell phones preferred) please try and get these to me as soon as possible so I can make training as convenient as possible for all of us.
Thanks guys, you're the best!

PS) I'm going to Yale this weekend for the football game against Cornell, I'll make sure to wear my Harvard t-shirt under my Yale sweatshirt :)
Hi everyone,
Some new info:
A couple people have asked how to include the lab on their study card
for course credit. Everyone who is not currently writing a thesis in the
lab should mark the course number *2610r* and as *pass/fail only*. Then
you'll need your study card signed by Professor Mendes. There may also
be the option to receive a grade, although this requires writing a paper
at the end of the semester. The later option will also need to be
discussed with Professor Mendes.
Also a few reminders:
1.) I'd like to offer a very sincere thank you (hugs!!) to everyone who
has sent me a version of their schedule so far. From my end, the most
helpful information you can give me is when you are NOT available (i.e.
classes or regularly scheduled extracurriculars). If you can give me
that information, then together we can decide on the hours you'd like to
work.
2.) Most people haven't sent me their telephone numbers yet (cell phones
preferred)...C'mon, don't worry I won't sell them to telemarketers or
write them on bathroom stalls!
Hi everyone,
One problem that we ran into this summer was that the contact list did
not include telephone numbers for everyone. Email is nice but in a real
emergency, it's nice to be able to contact someone quickly. I'm creating
a revised contact list now that will include phone numbers. If you have
a cell phone, that number is prefered. Can everyone please send me their
phone numbers so they can be added to the list. At the first lab meeting
(probably next week, TBA) I will hand out a draft of the contact list
and you can confirm your information then.
Hurrah for changes for the better!

Hi everyone,
For those of you who don't know me, I'm Carrigan, the new Lab Manager in Professor Mendes' Lab. I hope everyone had a great summer, it's been a very productive time in the lab. Thanks again to everyone working this summer to make it happen! We have a lot on deck for this fall, and from what I've heard, the first few weeks at school are pretty hectic while you guys figure out your schedules. In order for us to begin running as soon as we can, I'll need you to be communicating openly with me about your availability. If you could send me a preliminary schedule and a finalized schedule as soon as you have it that would be extremely helpful. Also, beginning next week we'll be expecting people in the lab for physio scoring, video coding, etc. (As if seeing me wasn't all the incentive you needed to come in!) If you're available, stop by--or better yet, send me an email to let me know if and when you can come in.
I can't wait to see everyone, it's been much to quiet around here lately!
Let's do like the Black Eyed Peas and "Get it started now" :)

Hi everyone,
This is just a test of the lab-email I'm setting up. If you receive this
message, please respond so that I know it's working.
Thanks!
