Subject: RISD Job Announcement

Dear Allie,

I am writing to ask you to forward this job announcement to any of your current or recent PhD graduates who may be interested in a two-year visiting position within the History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences (HPSS) department at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).   I will be serving as Interim Dean of Liberal Arts for two years, and this position is a replacement for me during that time.  We will begin reviewing applications May 31.  Any questions can be directed to the HPSS department head, Lindsay French (lfrench@risd.edu) or to me directly.

We seek candidates who can demonstrate quality undergraduate teaching, teach broadly in their field, and represent various aspects of their discipline within the department. We seek a scholar who can teach artists and designers about the role of psychological processes in human experience, grounding this understanding in classic and contemporary psychological theories and methodologies. Subfield is open, but ideal candidates would have a broad background in social, developmental, cross-cultural psychology, or related subfields. We welcome colleagues whose work engages with issues of gender and/or sexuality, media studies, political psychology, stereotyping and prejudice, or examines diversity within a given culture or cross culturally.

All candidates should demonstrate quality teaching, and have the ability to contribute to our undergraduate concentrations. Interested candidates could also be considered for teaching in one of our divisional master degree programs in Nature/Culture Sustainability Studies and Global Arts and Cultures.

The suitable candidate will have undergraduate teaching experience and a Ph.D. in hand in the field of psychology and/or behavioral sciences.

Rhode Island School of Design is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,400 graduate and undergraduate students. Over one third of our population is international.  HPSS is a multidisciplinary department within the Division of Liberal Arts at RISD. Our students are art and design majors who take one third of their courses in the Liberal Arts. Learn more about the department here: http://www.risd.edu/academics/hpss/

Full time faculty teach six courses a year: two lecture courses (capped at 25 students), one innovative 5-week wintersession course (21 students) one seminar (capped at 15) and two sections of our required first year seminar on Issues in History, Philosophy and the Social Sciences (designed differently within specific parameters by each faculty member).

Term Appointments function as full members of the department; they participate in departmental decision-making and take on committee assignments.

Thanks!

Jennifer
