The Department of History, Philosophy and the Social Sciences (HPSS) at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) invites
applications for a one year full-time Assistant Professor in Residence in Cognitive Science starting in fall of 2019.

Position Summary
We are seeking a scholar in cognitive science whose work explores the mind and mental processes, including possible focal
areas on language development and linguistics, memory, information processing, sensation and perception, cognitive neuroscience, and/or philosophical understandings of the mind and mental processes. The ideal candidate would situate their work within an art
and design context, recognizing how artists and designers might benefit from a greater understanding of mental processes.
Qualifications
The suitable candidate will have undergraduate teaching experience and a broad background in cognitive science. Candidates should have a Ph.D.
in a relevant discipline (e.g., cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics) by July 1st, 2019.
RISD is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,400 students, 2000 of whom are undergraduates. HPSS is
a multidisciplinary department within the Division of Liberal Arts. Our students are art and design majors who take one third of their courses in the Liberal Arts. RISD offers unique opportunities for collaborative research and teaching with faculty and students
in art and design disciplines (e.g., industrial design, apparel, textiles, architecture, film, etc.). Full-time faculty teach 6 courses a year at RISD, including some combination of undergraduate seminars (capped at 15), lecture courses (capped at 25), Wintersession
courses (capped at 20), and first year seminar courses (capped at 21). We seek candidates who demonstrate quality undergraduate teaching, can teach broadly in their field, and represent various aspects of their discipline within the department.
RISD supports faculty professional practice with conference funds and the potential for research funding. In addition to
teaching, fulltime faculty are expected to serve on college committees, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities and projects, and contribute to the vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college. For more
