The Bates College Department of Psychology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Developmental Psychology beginning in August 2023. The successful candidate will join a committed and collegial group of teacher-scholars in Psychology. While the exact area of specialization is open, we especially desire someone whose work engages with issues relevant to local communities, especially in an educational context. Such issues might include adverse childhood events, trauma, risk and resilience, attachment (particularly in high risk youth), identity and the lifespan (including racial and ethnic identities, gender identity, sexual identity, and/or transgender developmental issue), and disabilities. We seek those who can bring interdisciplinary and/or intersectional approaches, or a concern for social justice, to their teaching and research. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research, and will be expected to maintain an active research program as well as to teach foundation courses. We would appreciate your sharing information about our position with Ph.D. students or post-doctoral scholars in your graduate program. Bates is a highly selective, residential college founded in 1855 by abolitionists committed to civil rights and the “emancipating potential” of the liberal arts. Located in Lewiston, Maine, the state’s second-largest city, the college is home to 1800 undergraduates taught by more than 200 faculty members, with a 11-1 student-faculty ratio. Our academic calendar consists of two semesters and a three-week “Short Term,” during which students are able to focus on one intensive course. A typical teaching load is five courses.

Bates has a strong sense of its mission and identity and a deep commitment to innovative and inclusive pedagogy. The hallmark of a Bates education is an undergraduate research experience in the form of senior thesis or capstone work for all students. Consistent with its founding, the college is also committed to recruiting and supporting students and faculty from all backgrounds. Candidates who can enhance the diversity of the faculty and/or support an increasingly diverse student body are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in attracting colleagues who share our commitment to the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of students from a wide range of under-represented and marginalized identities. If you have questions or require additional information, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Kathryn Graff Low, Ph.D.
