Proposal:
_____________________________________
Step 1 -- Quick Fix
Justin and I met last week and propose that we quickly give the
current site a fresh look. This entails the following:
Justin will create a new banner with a cleaner design for the top of
the Web pages.
Deb will lay out the home page a little differently to include more
photos and white space.
Justin and Deb will work together to create a couple of different
layouts to present to the committee.
Justin and I would like to present these layouts to the committee for
your input within the next two weeks. We can meet face-to-face to
fine tune a layout that suits our needs once you've had a chance to
see our rough designs.
We need to decide whether we are happy having Justin and Deb take
this on, as opposed to using UIS Web Site Development Services (these
considerations are budget-related and we are in discussion with Mark).
Step 1 gives us a fresher looking Web site quickly and at a minimal
expense, allowing us to fine tune our specific programming
requirements before proceeding with Step 2 below.
_____________________________________
Step 2 -- New Functionality
Once we have incorporated a design that we like and live with it for
a short while, we can tweak the layout and then prepare a list of the
exact functionality that we need to implement, such as:
browser-based tools for designated staff to update the content
automated updates that are date-sensitive
online reservation form and booking process for weddings (and other services?)
transaction processing for books, CDs, etc.
video streaming (note that we are already streaming audio of Sunday
sermons on our site as a learning experience)
Step 2 involves contracting a programmer, creating forms, and
preparing databases. The functionality that we can expect is
directly related to our budgeted resources.

Memorial Church Web Committee #1-- Purpose of the Committee
Date Issued: January 8, 2005
Deadline for Feedback: January 13, 2005
1. Purpose: This Web Committee is devising the process by which the
right content gets on the Web, and determining what needs to be done
by whom and when (how regularly) it needs to be done.
Justin Mullane will assert the interests of the Communications Department
Mark Edington will assert the interests of PJG, the Music
Department, and the Church
Leslie Kress will assert the interests of Dorothy Austin and the
sexton's office
Ariel Kramer will assert the interests of the Church with regard to
providing the developers databases to automatically publish content
on the Web
2. Ongoing Oversight: This committee oversees the continuing
effectiveness of the Web site on an ongoing basis and is responsible
for new initiatives.
3. Deb will convene each meeting with an agenda, make proposals and
give reasons for those proposals.
4. Committee members will review Deb's proposals and either agree or
make alternative suggestions. Members are encouraged to post
comments and feedback as many times as they have something to say.
5. I propose that I convene a meeting once a week, that we have an
ongoing dialogue with a meeting "ending time," at which point we can
move on to the next round of discussion. I propose that the ending
time be 48 hours after the meeting start.
