Dear arts tutors,
I hope you’re all well and enjoying the break so far!
I was hoping that you might be able to forward the message below to your
house lists. I’m running a winter session program with Jody Diamond, the
music department artist-in-residence, on opera, gamelan, and shadow theater
at the SOCH, and it would be great to have some enthusiastic participants!
Thanks so much!
Best wishes,
Hayley

*WINTERSESSION PROGRAM: The Magic Flute and Javanese Shadow Theater*
Whether you love theater, are a budding story-teller, have a fascination
with puppets, want to learn a musical instrument from scratch, or would
like to find out more about familiar or new artistic practices and their
oft unexpected but compelling cross-cultural resonances, join our
wintersession program! Everyone is welcome!
This exciting Wintersession course *(1pm-4pm on January 18, 19 and 20)*
explores the traditions and practices of Javanese shadow theater through
the story of *The Magic Flute*. Using Lotte Reiniger's short animated film
*Papageno* as a source of inspiration, we will devise and develop our own
version of *The Magic Flute*. We will perform the roles with Javanese
shadow puppets and we will play the music on Harvard's very own gamelan, Si
Betty. Absolutely no experience required! *REGISTER HERE*

*3. Christmas Revels show - Dec. 9-27; price depends on seat (open to all)*
The Christmas Revels, "An Acadian-Cajun Celebration ofthe Winter Solstice,"
is at Sanders Theater throughout December. The Revels is a Cambridge-based
non-profit organization that has become an annual tradition for many. It
combines song, dance, and theatrical spectacle with an amateur chorus and
professional leads, each year exploring and appreciating the traditional
songs of a different culture.
French Canadians might especially be interested to see Josee Vachon on
stage, while fans of Cajun folk music will get to see David Greeley.
Francophones will be happy to hear that our music is, of course, mostly in
French. Other big names and details for the shows can be found at
http://www.revels.org/shows-events/christmas-revels/. Tickets are sold
through the Harvard Box Office.
*4. 107th annual Christmas Carol services - Sunday Dec. 11, 7:30-9pm; FREE

currently undergoing renovation). Admission is free; an offering for

Good luck with end-of-the semester work!
