HARVARD UNIVERSITY, Boylston 105, Cambridge, MA 02138
"Classics in UK Elementary and High Schools: The Dawn of a New Era?"
Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson will outline two innovative research projects in the UK which seek to raise the profile, currency and status of Classics in education. The first project (Advocating Classics Education) aims to extend access to the study of Classics in translation in high schools. The second project (Classics in Communities) investigates what impact the learning of Classical languages in elementary schools has on children's cognitive development. An international expert in Classics education policy, pedagogy and practice, Dr Holmes-Henderson will share the findings to date and will outline the likely future shape of the UK Classics education landscape.
Bio:
Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson studied Classics at Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge universities. She specializes in Classics education policy and pedagogy. A Fulbright scholar, Erskine Fellow and Churchill Fellow, she conducts research into the value of a Classical education in the twenty-first century. She advises governments, qualifications authorities and educational institutions worldwide in the field of on curriculum and assessment design. She has published extensively on Humanities education in practice, and language education policy (including comparative studies in the USA, Australia and New Zealand). She is visiting Harvard from the UK to provide an overview of her current Classics education research projects at Oxford and King's College London.

The Saint and the Sow: Poetics of Illusion in a Brazilian Imitation of Plautus
Written in 1957, the popular Brazilian comedy O Santo e a Porca (The Saint and the Sow) has its classical source of inspiration already stated in its subtitle: a "Northeastern Imitation of Plautus". Its author, Ariano Suassuna (1927-2014), alludes in particular to the play Aulularia (The Pot of Gold) by Titus Maccius Plautus (3rd- 2nd century BC). As we shall see, the allusiveness of the play goes beyond its subtitle: it is apparent in Suassuna's plot, in his imitation of Plautine speaking names, word-games, and other comic techniques. Professor Tardin-Cardoso will first illustrate the way the Brazilian play calls attention both to its proximity to and distance from its Roman model. By means of such a dialogue, Suassuna underlines (just as Plautus had) his inspirations in popular culture. She will also argue that in Suassuna's reception of the way Plautus represents deception in his theater, the modern playwright provides a fresh kind of illusion that reflects the image of life and Brazilian culture represented in his drama.

"How coin finds are changing the face of Roman Britain: the contribution of the Portable Antiquities Scheme"
After surveying the study of Roman coin finds in Britain from the sixteenth century to the present day, I will show how our understanding of these finds has been transformed in the last 40 years by the explosion in new finds brought to light through metal detecting. I will discuss how the 1996 Treasure Act and the Portable Antiquities Scheme have enabled us to record these finds and will finish by presenting some of the results of a research project to study hoards of Iron Age and Roman coins from Britain.

Tue., Oct. 10, 2017, 2 – 6 p.m.
Under the auspices of the Initiative for the Science of the Human Past at
Harvard, and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in
Jena, Germany, we are launching an exciting new virtual Research Center at
Harvard and Jena: The Max Planck Harvard Research Center for the
Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean (MHAAM). We are combining our
institutions’ strengths in genetics, archaeology, history, and philology to
bring the power of 21st-century technology to bear on some of history's
great unsolved questions, starting with the peopling of the ancient
Mediterranean, and the identity and impact of ancient pathogens on the fall
of the Roman Empire.
On Tuesday, October 10, Harvard will be hosting an inaugural workshop
presenting some of the remarkable results of the initial research programs
undertaken by MHAAM. We would be honored if you are able to join us for
this unique event in Harvard Yard:
Public presentations of the first scientific results from MHAAM. Speakers
will include Susan Alcock (University of Michigan), Johannes Krause (Max
Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, Jena), Iosif Lazaridis,

“In the Land of Samnites and Snake-Charmers: Roman Colonisation in Central
Italy”
This paper explores the experiences of Roman colonists in one region, the
central Apennines, a mountainous area inhabited by tribes traditionally
hostile to the Romans, such as the Samnites. An examination of the
archaeology and history of these colonies sheds light on how colonists
changed this landscape and interacted with their new neighbors in ways
which fundamentally shaped the development of the region and growth of
Rome's power in central Italy.

the Portable Antiquities Scheme”
After surveying the study of Roman coin finds in Britain from the sixteenth
century to the present day, I will show how our understanding of these
finds has been transformed in the last 40 years by the explosion in new
finds brought to light through metal detecting. I will discuss how the 1996
Treasure Act and the Portable Antiquities Scheme have enabled us to record
these finds and will finish by presenting some of the results of a research
project to study hoards of Iron Age and Roman coins from Britain.
