Digital Annotation of Classical Texts and Effective Digitization: The Dickinson College
Commentaries
Project<https://classics.fas.harvard.edu/boston-area-classics-calendar?t…
Mon., Mar. 15, 5:30 p.m.
BROWN UNIVERSITY (Zoom)
The Classics Department graduate students cordially invite you to join us for the 11th
Annual Grimshaw-Gudewicz Lecture, a lecture organized by the Classics Department graduate
students. This year, Digital Annotation of Classical Texts and Effective Digitization: The
Dickinson College Commentaries Project, will be presented by Christopher Francese from
Dickinson College via Zoom.
Classical studies sits on a gold mine of print reference works (lexica, commentaries,
grammars, concordances), many of them in the public domain, that are the envy of other
fields. The internet itself is, among other things, one gigantic reference work. People go
to it in their billions every day to find information about the present and the past.
Unfortunately, the information found there about the past is often partial, garbled, and
not created by qualified scholars. The digitization of existing high-quality reference
resources in classics and turning them into easily consulted digital resources is a
massive opportunity which is neglected for various reasons by the contemporary academic
world. But going from book to effective digital resource is no simple matter of
transcription. This talk discusses techniques of and further opportunities for effective
digitization as a way to make direct experience of classical texts more available to
people around the world, in the context of the peer-reviewed commentary series Dickinson
College Commentaries.

"Black Is Queen: The Divine Feminine in Kush"
The prominence of powerful goddesses and queens in the Nubian Kingdom of Kush (now
Northern Sudan) highlights the unusually high status of women in this ancient African
society and serves as a fitting focus for the study of female power in the ancient world.
Using temple inscriptions found in Egypt and Nubia, the rich funerary goods found in royal
burials, and temple and tomb imagery, Solange Ashby will discuss how ancient Africans of
the Nile Valley understood female power and presence. Songs from Beyoncé’s recent
production “Black Is King” will be woven into this presentation on Kushite queens to
emphasize the power and centrality of the African queen mother in her royal family and
kingdom.

April 2021
Harvard Forum on Cultural Heritage: “The National Museum of Afghanistan—Retrieving the
Past, Securing the
Future”<https://classics.fas.harvard.edu/boston-area-classics-calendar?t…
Tue., Apr. 6, 10 – 11 a.m.
Zoom (registration details available soon)
Deborah Klimburg-Salter, Professor of Art History, University of Vienna, Austria/ Assoc.
Dept. of South Asian Studies, Harvard University
Philippe Delanghe, Head of Cultural Unit, UNESCO, Kabul, Afghanistan
Mohammad Fahim Rahimi, Director of the National Museum of Afghanistan, Kabul
Oleg Golberg, Project Manager Funding Initiative Patrimonies, Gerda Henkel Stiftung,
Germany
Until its destruction during the decades-long war, the National Museum of Afghanistan in
Kabul was considered one of the most important museums in Asia. Tens of thousands of
unique excavated objects illuminated more than 5,000 years of Afghan history. The progress
of the restoration of the museum in all its areas has been remarkable. But continuing
violence and severe deficits in financial and human resources represent serious
obstacles.
This round table conversation will address the present situation of the museum, the
priorities of its director and staff, and visions for its future. The speakers will
discuss the museum's immediate and longer-term goals in capacity building and the
preservation of the country’s archaeological heritage, and they will address ways in which
international specialists can assist with these efforts.
This is first in a series of events organized by the Forum on Cultural Heritage at
Harvard, which aims to create a (for now virtual) meeting place for members of the
university community and others who share a concern for the preservation of cultural,
especially archaeological, heritage around the world.
