Legacies of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis
<https://classics.fas.harvard.edu/boston-area-classics-calendar?trumbaEmbed=view%3devent%26eventid%3d148443946>
Wed., Oct. 7, 11:30 p.m. – Thu., Oct. 8, 12:30 a.m.
Online via YouTube (no pre-registration required).
Please tune into the hour-long session on Sardis that is part of the
upcoming 24 Hours of Harvard event organized by the Office of the Vice
Provost for International Affairs (OVPIA) at Harvard University
The Archaeological Exploration of Sardis (Sardis Expedition), now in its
63rd consecutive year, is one of the longest ongoing international projects
of Harvard. The Expedition has created a remarkable legacy of collaboration
and mutual engagement between Turkish scholars and students, members of the
professional, government and local communities, and those of Harvard and
other international institutions. The multiple facets of the extraordinary
relationships the project fostered in Turkey will be brought to light
through a mix of live discussions and pre-recorded videos with some of
those impacted by the dig. We also hope to show the extent of the major
footprint of the facilities of the dig at the site, as well as some of the
monuments brought to light by the Expedition and the involvement of its
stakeholders.

"Shapeshifters: A Brief History from Antiquity to Modern Times"
Award-winning author John Kachuba will speak about the myths, magic, and
meaning surrounding shapeshifters—creatures that capture our imagination,
appealing to our animal nature, our “dark side,” our desire to break free
of the bonds of society and proper behavior. Real or imaginary,
shapeshifters lurk deep in our psyches and remain formidable cultural icons.
