This year, the Radcliffe Research Partnership program (a mentorship program
that matches undergraduates with Radcliffe fellows), has a research
assistant opportunity with a religious studies scholar, Steven Kaplan.
Details of his project are pasted below. This is a unique program to which
students and fellows respond very positively, so I encourage anyone who¹s
interested to apply! The application can be found on our website:
http://www.radcliffe.edu/fellowships/rrp/index.php.
Hours are to be determined between the student and fellow (our only
stipulation is that they cannot exceed 20 per week) and the hourly rate is
$11.00. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sophia Heller
at 495-7546 or at sheller(a)radcliffe.edu. The deadline for applications is on
September 28.
Cultural Creativity in the Ethiopian Orthodox Diaspora in the United States
As part of the cluster on Ethiopian Christian creativity at the Radcliffe
Institute, I plan to examine the ritual cycle of the Ethiopian Orthodox
Church as observed in the American diaspora. I will seek to document ritual
practice and discover what communitiesreal and imaginedare created and
sustained through ritual events. Fieldwork which I have already conducted in
Washington, DC; Carey, North Carolina; and New York City has indicated that
churches produce a vast amount of written, oral, and Internet material as
part of their regular celebrations. These materials include newsletters,
scriptural lessons presented at the service, and sermons that address issues
of immediate concern to the community.
In addition to the normal bibliographic and library assistance, I would like
my research partner to assist me in collecting and analyzing these
contemporary church documents. I would prefer to work with a student of
Ethiopian origin who has an ability to transcribe and translate material in
Amharic. Though clergy and church officials converse easily in English and
Biblical readings and liturgical materials are in Ge'ez (in which I work
comfortably), my knowledge of Amharic is rudimentary. Moreover, in contrast
to the Ge'ez materials, which are largely standardized, the sermons,
lessons, and newsletters are recent productions that differ from community
to community and continue to evolve through time.
I believe that work with a student partner will not only enrich my work but
will also be valuable to the student as he or she is exposed to a variety of
materials and interdisciplinary research methods. Moreover, my previous work
in Israel with students of Ethiopian descent indicates that cooperation with
a university researcher often serves as a catalyst for discussions with
parents and other family members concerning traditional culture and society.
