Subject: [Islamic-studies-program-list] Monday 3/5 - Film Screening: The Moon of Eid
The Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Islamic Studies Program invites you to a special screening of
The Moon of Eid (2011)
Monday, March 5, 2011
Harvard Hall 102
The Moon of Eid is a documentary film in The Holy Kitchens film series, which ties together the meaning of food in religion with the real world experience of sharing food in a spiritual context. Following the screening there will be a conversation with filmmakers Vikas Khanna and Andrew Blackmore-Dobbyn.
Sharing food is as old as time itself and an inseparable part of the human experience. When we share food in a spiritual setting we imbue it with meaning that draws us closer to our creator and closer to each other. A simple dish of lentils becomes much more than a simple bowl of food—it becomes spiritual sustenance that elevates our consciousness. The fasting month of Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and it sets lofty spiritual goals for its adherents. Ramadan culminates in the feast known as Eïd al-Fitr. During this lunar month of daytime fasting, adherents of Islam enjoy their favorite foods after the sunset call to prayer each day and communities are drawn together in sharing these feast foods known as Iftar. One of the Five Pillars of Islam is zakat, or providing alms to the poor and it brings communities together in a devoted spirit of sharing. Ramadan is an especially important time of year to practice zakat. The Moon of Eïd will explore these traditions along with the Five Pillars of Islam and talk with Muslims about the spiritual sharing of food in Islam.
