Note
Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and a founder of the Ramakrishna Mission and Vedanta Society. He was also one of the first Hindu swamis to become well-known in the West. He represented Hinduism at the 1893 "Parliament of Religions" held in Chicago, the first great international gathering of religious leaders. Since then he has been a symbol of the interfaith movement, inspiring many by his example and his many lectures on the meaning of religion in a pluralistic world. The focus of this panel will be reflection on his significance for India and the West 150 years after his birth, particularly his legacy with respect to today’s interfaith movement.
The panelists for this event will be: Brian Hatcher<http://ase.tufts.edu/religion/people/facultyHatcher.htm>, professor and chair of the Religion Department at Tufts University; Mou Banerjee, graduate student in the History Department at Harvard University; Francis X. Clooney<http://www.hds.harvard.edu/cswr/people/director.html>, professor at Harvard Divinity School and director of the Center for the Study of World Religions; and Chris Conway, graduate student in the Theology Department at Boston College. Harvard Chaplain Swami Tyagananda<http://chaplains.harvard.edu/people/swami-tyagananda> will preside and moderate the panel.
Though the panel will begin at 5:30pm, we invite you to join us at 5pm for a live music prelude and a slideshow of photos of Swami Vivekananda. The live music will be performed by Dave Bryant and the slideshow will be prepared by Joseph Peidle, both members of the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society.
