Dear Concentrators,
For those of you who are sophomores (or for any other reason will be taking
a junior tutorial next fall), it's time to start setting up those
tutorials. So that I can get started, could you email me a short
(one-paragraph) description of your ideas for next semester's
tutorial? Please email me your paragraph by Monday May 9.
As you think about the tutorial, remember that it should focus on a topic
in your major tradition (or one of the two, if you are focusing on two
traditions). You will be writing your junior paper in the
tutorial. Ideally, it will be a topic that could lead into your senior
thesis, though it will impossible to know for sure at this point.
Remember that the recent changes to the religion curriculum mean that you
are only required to take one tutorial, and you can take it either semester
of junior year. (You are welcome to take two if you would like to have
more time to focus on a specific topic and work one-on-one with a graduate
student.) Those of you in religion and an allied field typically take one
junior tutorial in religion and one in the allied field. Those in a joint
concentration with religion as secondary are not required to take a junior
tutorial. However, joint concentrators are welcome to take a junior
tutorial (or a second one in the case of religion and an allied field) if
you would like. If you are a sophomore but are not planning to take a
junior tutorial in the fall, please let me know as soon as possible. Let
me know if you have any questions--either about the requirements or about
how you might think about your tutorial plans.
As most of you know, once I have your paragraphs, I will begin matching you
with graduate students interested in leading tutorials in your area.
I hope the semester is going well. I'll see you at the party on the 10th.
With best wishes,
Thomas Lewis
