Dear all,
Based on my conversations with many of you and conversations with the HQI directors, below are some notes on a few common questions/concerns. This is a relatively long email so please bear with me.
Courses:
A common sentiment I heard was that of high course loads and as a consequence, not enough time for research. While this might be a valid concern, I would also encourage you to think on a slightly longer timeline. Right now it might feel frustrating that you are unable to dedicate enough time for research, however, as you get more deeply involved in your PhD projects it might be even more frustrating if you had significant amount of coursework remaining. So, try to make a plan to hit the right balance on a longer time scale. I am attaching a model student timeline that was proposed when the QSE PhD program was approved. Take a look. While, you don’t have to follow this timeline and it is recognized that each person would create their own individual timelines this could provide a useful guideline. On a somewhat related note, currently there are no plans for an exam to test out of the core-courses requirements.

Teaching:
Similar to the Physics and SEAS teaching practicum courses, we plan to create an equivalent course for QSE. The goals of this course would be for QSE students to learn the basics of pedagogy and provide a practice-based environment to improve teaching, presentation, and communication skills. The current plan is to offer it in Spring as a required course and will be taught by Evelyn and me. I will send out more details in January.
Internships:
Having spoken to a few folks from the office of career development as well as the industry partnerships office, there seems to be a lot of interest in industry towards workforce development in the broad “quantum” area. What that means is there are likely going to be many internship opportunities. In this sheet<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kLSnUyINjOzKa0EGEvCSpsABr23vgOG9YBY…>, I have listed companies that were brought up in the discussion. There is also a column called “Interest”. If you are interested in an internship opportunity at any of these companies, please add 1 to the number in that column. The career services folks have promised to find relevant contacts in the companies that students have indicated more interest in. Also, if there are companies that you know of and are not listed, please feel free to add them.
Conference Travel:
The HQI directors reiterated that if students want to present research at a conference they should first approach the primary PI on that research to support travel. However, as I had mentioned a few weeks ago, HQI will have a travel fund for attending conferences with certain restrictions. You can only apply for these funds before your third semester. They should ideally not be used for attending conferences where you are presenting research (again the sentiment here is that it is the PI’s responsibility to fund any research-related travel). We plan to provide more details in January. (For those who might want to present research, have spoken with your PI, and yet are unable to secure funds for the travel, please reach out to me and we will deal with this on a case-by-case basis.)
There might be other more specific questions that are not addressed above and if you don’t hear from me, please get in touch and we can talk more details. For those who I did not get to talk to, I will be available again after January 12th. I wont have office hours starting next week until the week of Jan. 16. Meanwhile, if anything pressing comes up please don’t hesitate to reach out on Slack or email.
On a separate note:
For those of you who might be interested in research at the intersection of quantum and machine learning, please take a look at this page about the Kempner institute’s graduate fellowship<https://www.harvard.edu/kempner-institute/the-kempner-institute-for-the-stu…>. The fellowship provides 4-6 years of full financial support and good visibility. You have to be invited to apply. So, if you are interested, please reach out to me and we can talk further.
I wish you all happy holidays and a fun yet peaceful break!
Best,
Nishant
