---- Appendix, from Walt:
Baseline two-year data reduction
---------------------------------
What we've been doing:
* Spent substantial time in 2012 addressing discrete artifacts in
the data, including glitches and step-like crosstalk.
* Cut definition is nearly complete.
* The recent reducplots show the success of these efforts:
there are only a very few examples of non-standard behavior
remaining in the scan plots.
Efforts now in progress and to be completed soon:
* El-nod goodness of fit cut:
- Now have strong evidence this cut is important for BICEP2:
+ 2012 Oct 12: Threshold-crossing gain change in
GCP 165 (RWO)
+ 2012 Oct 12: Threshold-crossing gain excursion in more
channels (RWO)
- Martin has defined several new cut parameters
- Angiola will regenerate cutparams files, cutplots,
study thresholds
- Regenerate cutparams, default cuts when ready.
* Other cuts:
- Thresholds for stationarity_ab and elnod_mean are now set.
- Will take Jamie Tolan's adjustments to scanset_std
and tfpu_std.
- Angiola to make sure default cut thresholds get updated,
include in new cut plots.
* Follow-up on the few remaining oddities in reducplots.
- Walt working on this now.
- May require additional cuts or tweaks to existing cuts,
thresholds, or deglitching.
- In case of deglitching changes, could require new run of
low-level reduction.
* NTD calibration
- Walt to propose scheme for applying offline cal for periods
when needed.
- Will redo low-level reduction for this period only.
* Once this is done, can define stable TODs / data selection /
cuts / pairmaps / reducplots.
Next steps:
* Write up final observing efficiency, etc. Easy -- follows
SPIE papers with a few updates.
* Human eyeball test for final version of all reducplots.
- Will need volunteers...
Decisions to make:
* The high-weight catch has been removed from reduc_makepairmaps.
Restore in reduc_coaddpairmaps or in reducplots?
* How to make maps of dark TESs, dark SQUIDs, NTD?
- How to apply cuts?
- "clean" version would require substantial changes to code
- put off until after BICEP2 first results?

Hi,
Paul Edmon sent around an email noting that panlfs was at 94%. The current
round of sims is partially responsible for this. I'm looking at ways to
decrease disk space usage for simsets, but until then it would be nice to
delete unwanted data products from panlfs.
For instance, before running my sims (which take ~24 TB) I deleted all the
pairmaps from an old simset that we will in all likelihood never revisit.
That should have made ~15 TB of space for the new sims. Deleting Justus'
pairmaps alone (03xx) should free up ~10 TB.
Here is a list of sizes of folders in the /n/panlfs/bicep/bicep2/pipeline
directory as of yesterday. I have already deleted data/1233/ because I
don't need it. (Sorry they're not sorted.)
I want to hear from people. Let's not just keep data products around
because we think we have infinite storage capacity. We don't.

Hi all,
As in past seasons, we have a number of large calibration parts (new
chopper, RPS, possibly the FTS) that we would like to have the option to
handcarry. I've done this many times in the past, see e.g. the attached
photo. Zak's recent email makes it sound like this is no longer possible:
On 10/24/12 5:35 PM, Zak Staniszewski wrote:
> After searching baggage restrictions, I have determined that I cannot

It looks like Zak got this from the Qantas website, looking at what they
say about standard checked bags. To avoid any confusion I called
American Airlines (800-882-8880) and spoke to their expert on
international baggage restrictions (named "Stella"). She told me very
clearly that for destinations in the Pacific including Australia/NZ the
rules are:
1. standard (free) baggage allowance for coach is 2 pieces, 50 lbs 62"
(L+W+H) max.
2. Oversize pieces with total dimensions 62-126" can be checked for a
fee of $150 each, up to additional oversize 8 pieces per traveler.
3. Overweight pieces 50-70 lbs can similarly be checked for $60 per
piece. Pieces that are both oversize and overweight can combine these
($210 extra per piece). Of course we will reimburse all fees.
4. Since American Airlines is the ticketing airline for the entire
itinerary, their rules apply to all legs, even those operated by other
airlines (Qantas, Emirates, etc). You pay the fee once when you check
in, and your bags are checked all the way through with no additional
oversize fees. This is true even for itineraries (e.g. from LAX) where
the first leg may be Qantas rather than American.
Folks at the ticketing counters where you check your bags may or may not
know all these rules, so it pays to be able to quote all this to them,
saying you've gotten it straight from the AA International Baggage
office. Let me know if you hear anyone at American contradict the above
so we can keep this updated.

- will probably have to run as separate catalogue
and compare to the PSM prediction.
- Will try this out first for B1.

* Current work: Posting in B1 analysis logbook:
http://bicep0.caltech.edu/~bicep/analysis_logbook_north/20121019_toy_model
- compare method in toy model: direct calc, quadratic estimator,
offset-lognormal, Hamimeche-Lewis
- offset-lognormal method not a good match
* Planned work:
- Immanual to extend “toy model” to include:
- freq cross spectra, TE cross spectrum, E->B leakage.
- Colin refining rho statistic (quadratic estimator)
* Eventual goal
- Use Hamimeche-Lewis for bandpower likelihoods
(CosmoMC compatible)
- Use quadratic estimator rho for limits on r
- Use H-L bandpower likelihoods for 95% CL BB band powers

LHe:
• Approximately 3500 liters of useable LHe remain in the Wessington dewars.
• Approximately 250 liters of LHe were delivered to BICEP2.
• Based on a historical consumption rate of 35.7 liters/day, LHe
supplies are expected to be exhausted by January 2013
GHe:
• Out of 16 storage tanks for gaseous helium: 8 tanks are at 17.2 MPa
(2500 psi), one tank is at 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), one tank is at 10.3 MPa
(1500 psi), one tank is at 19.5 MPa (1400 psi), two tanks are at 2.8 MPa
(400 psi), one tanks is at 1.0 MPa (150 psi), and two tanks are at 0 MPa
(0 psi).
• Vent GHe from the LHe transfer was compressed into the storage tanks.
LN2:
• The liquid nitrogen plant off all week
• Approximately 400 liters of LN2 are currently stockpiled on station.
