Dear all,
I am writing on behalf of the History for Real Recourse Collective. Thank
you for coming out to the first town hall! As we stated at the end of the
meeting, we are asking the department to hold another town hall meeting
where we will present a list of proposed solutions to the problems
(including, but not limited to, sexual assault, abuses of power,
discrimination, or advising issues) plaguing our department.
Tomorrow (2/27) we are holding a Zoom meeting at 10 AM to set an agenda,
share collective grievances, and brainstorm potential reparations, requests
and solutions to raise to the department. We invite you all to join us so
that your voice is heard and your individual problems can be addressed. You
may also share ideas and help us plan our meeting on *our google doc*

from those who would rather not speak publically.

We have some! In the grad lounge!
This week's menu:
blueberry muffins
chocolate and vanilla muffins
clementines
seltzers (Polar, if that's the kind of thing that matters to you)
While I do NOT condone taking only part of a bagel (no one wants your stale
chunk of raisin bagel !!), I support splitting these muffins into pieces.
They are large! Some would even say Costco size!

Dear fellow history students,
We will be hosting a Zoom meeting tonight at 6:00 PM to discuss our plans
for the town hall tomorrow and get more input from interested students. You
can find the link to register at the bottom of this e-mail.
Please help us work out objectives and topics that you would like to hear
voiced at the meeting. Alternatively, we have made an anonymous google form
<https://forms.gle/sG2MnZiTRcGwZTuj7> through which graduate and
undergraduate students can submit anonymous testimonies or comments that
they wish to share at the town hall but are hesitant to do so under their
own name. We will have graduate student volunteers read them at the town
hall on your behalf. *We will be accepting anonymous comments both in
advance of and during the town hall. *If you wish to submit an anonymous
comment that you would like us to put in the chat box during the town
hall--as a response to ongoing proceedings, etc.--rather than read aloud,
please begin your comment with [chat box].
We need your input to be able to present suggestions that represent the
desires and interests of a majority of students. You can also use this google
doc
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/12BGpUq6TMRQVz6bqtnumGx7xEEHV1EoYj3Ljo32…>
to share input and comments with fellow history graduate and undergraduate
students as we plan for the town hall meeting. We are coordinating these
efforts on our whatsapp group
<https://chat.whatsapp.com/EE235mtzNMtHdXMvCc0PcC> which we welcome you all
to join, too.
Please find the information for the zoom meeting below.
You are invited to a Zoom meeting.
When: Feb 21, 2022 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Dear fellow history students,
As you may know, the History department has called a town hall meeting this
Tuesday to discuss recent events on campus related to sexual harassment and
the breakdown of trust in the department. I write on behalf of a group of
graduate students in the department who are organizing to set an agenda,
share collective grievances, and brainstorm potential reparations, requests
and solutions to raise to the department.
We have already asked the department to add Kenneth Alyass as a secondary
moderator for the town hall, so that we can ensure our contributions are
voiced, and are working on an agenda that we will share with them ahead of
time. They have also asked that we share a list of graduate students
willing to speak first to start the meeting. We are working on shared
statements to read covering some of the points we want to emphasize below:
-
Power imbalances and structural problems that need to be addressed
-
Testimonies and comments regarding departmental climate
-
Concerns voiced by admitted students about Harvard’s unwillingness to
address harassment, sexual or otherwise
-
Potential solutions to the above problems
-
A small presentation on real recourse by Emma Friedlander
These issues are hard to talk about, and many of us are scared of
retaliation. As a result, we have made a google form
<https://forms.gle/sG2MnZiTRcGwZTuj7> through which graduate students can
submit anonymous testimonies or comments that they wish to share at the
town hall but are hesitant to do so on their own or under their own name.
We will have graduate student volunteers read them at the town hall on your
behalf. Only the creators of this document will have access to the
testimonials and/or comments and they will all be deleted after the town
hall.
Yesterday at the happy hour, we discussed preliminary objectives to present
to the department. We are still workshopping them, and welcome any and all
input from fellow graduate students. Nothing is finalized, but a rough list
is below:
-
Commitment to support efforts for real recourse by history faculty via
open letter
-
Commitment to support internal supportive measures
<https://nwlc.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Supportive-Measures-FAQ-IHE-vF.…>
if a complainant comes forward about abuse or harassment in the department.
-
Commitment that the new chair of the department is someone who has shown
a previous commitment to real recourse reforms
-
That sanctions against professors found in violation of title ix are
made public within the History community to allow students to make informed
decisions about who we interact with on campus.
We need your input to be able to present suggestions that represent the
desires and interests of a majority of students. Please use this google doc
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/12BGpUq6TMRQVz6bqtnumGx7xEEHV1EoYj3Ljo32…>
to share input and comments with fellow history graduate students as we
plan for the town hall meeting. We are coordinating these efforts on
our whatsapp
group <https://chat.whatsapp.com/EE235mtzNMtHdXMvCc0PcC> which we welcome
you all to join, too.
We realize we’ve all been through a fraught few weeks, but continuing to
engage in this town hall is important. This is about more than just the 8
(!!) History faculty who signed the letter. It is a unique chance to
emphasize to faculty that their students are committed to real structural
change at both the departmental and the university level. While a group of
us have already jump started these efforts, we want this process to be as
open and inclusionary as possible. We depend on each other, always, and are
privileged to be part of such a caring and critical community.

Hello everyone!
My name is Andrew Suárez, and I'm an American Studies PhD student
coordinating this year's American Studies Workshop. I wanted to plug our
upcoming event here and invite History graduate students as I think it
could be insightful for both our programs!
Next *Tuesday, February 22nd at 4:30 pm in Sever 104*, the American Studies
Workshop will be hosting an in-person panel of the Warren Center's
Postdoctoral Fellows in American History. Sara Awartani, Kris Klein
Hernández, and Ida Yalzadeh will be discussing their forthcoming book
projects and trajectories as scholars. With projects on the political and
imperial connections between Puerto Rico and Palestine, militarization of
the U.S.-Mexico border, and the history of Iranian racialization in the
U.S., I think these projects speak to shared research interests among our
programs. Please read more about their bios and research here
<https://warrencenter.fas.harvard.edu/people/postdoc-fellows>. If you would
like to attend our event next Tuesday, please RSVP at this link
<https://forms.gle/n4DoyFVQemnMDdU8A>. Take-away food will be provided as
well per COVID restrictions.
Thanks so much and hope some of you can join us!
