Dear everyone,
The History Department and History Graduate Students Association are
excited to announce the first Faculty Coffee Chat of the spring semester.
It will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 between 2 PM and 3:30 PM in
the Graduate Student Lounge in Robinsonal Hall. All graduate students are
welcome to attend. There will be free coffee and pastries from Flour Bakery.
Our guest will be Dr. Lizabeth Cohen. Dr. Cohen is the Howard Mumford Jones
Professor of American Studies. She is a historian of the twentieth-century
urban United States. In the past, she has written about the formation of
the coalition behind the New Deal, the spread of mass consumption in the
post-Second World War U.S., and urban renewal. She is currently writing a
comparative history of deindustrialization.
If you are interested in twentieth-century U.S. history, various facets of
urban life, or would just like to meet Professor Cohen, please attend the
Coffee Chat on February 6.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Sanjay
Dear all,
I am happy to share our list of upcoming spring workshop presentations for
the Global Environments Working Group (poster attached), featuring many of
our friends and colleagues in the department. Please let me know if you'd
like to be on our e-mail list to receive workshop announcements and
pre-circulated papers.
Our first meeting will be the only zoom meeting of the semester. All other
sessions will be held in the seminar room of 9 Kirkland. We will meet on
Tuesday, February 6, 10:30 - 11:45 am on zoom to workshop Sara Kinell's
paper titled "Global Models & Local Knowledges: Machine Learning and
Politics in Flood Forecasting." Please let me know if you would like to
attend and to receive the paper and zoom link. I attach the abstract below.
Best wishes,
Nathaniel
Hi History folks,
My name is Catey Boyle (she/they), I'm a G6 in History, and one of your
social sciences stewards for the Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU). I’m
writing to touch base for the spring semester and share HGSU news and wins,
reminders to apply for benefits, and information on an upcoming Social
Sciences Union Social.
This past semester, we received news that Harvard Graduate School of Arts
and Sciences (GSAS) will be increasing student stipends to about $49,000 of
take-home pay, with about $1,000 going toward dental and travel expenses
for GSAS PhD students on a GSAS funding package*.* *This compensation raise
is a direct result of your union organizing in the middle of a contract! *We
are still waiting on additional details from GSAS, including what this
means for years after guaranteed teaching or during dissertation writing
completion fellowships. If you have any questions, feel free to email me
directly and I will work to get more clarification.
With regards to benefits, *a reminder that reimbursement for bike benefits
is due on 31 January (Wednesday)*. This includes money spent on a bike
purchase, tune-up, accessories, and more. Please review the qualifying
guidelines here
<https://www.transportation.harvard.edu/commuterchoice/bike/bike-commuter-be…>
and reach out with any questions about how to apply.
Keep an eye out for *a Social Sciences Union Social coming up next month,
22 February 2024 (Thursday), at 5pm, in the Robinson Hall (History
Department)* Great Space! Bring a friend, grab some pizza and drinks, and
connect with fellow student workers! More information including RSVP will
be sent out soon.
Thanks for reading, and, as always, I am here for you. If you have any
questions or issues in your workplace, please email me directly and I will
make sure your question is addressed. *As bargaining for a new contract
approaches, we would love for more student workers to get involved with the
union as departmental representatives, stewards for the social sciences,
and more. *Let me know if you’d like to speak more about shaping the future
of student worker life and this union!
In solidarity,
Catey

Hello hello!
This coming Friday is the prospectus conference, and we are going to
celebrate our presenters with a champagne toast (okay maybe prosecco or
cava) and a potluck spread!
'Tis the season for recipe experimentation (read: it's cold and dark out).
So bring out your finest baked goods, dips, and shareable bites :-) We can
keep any dishes that need chilling in the Robinson fridge and coolers
throughout the day.
We will begin after the conference (around 4 p.m.).
Can't wait to see you all and to celebrate this milestone !!!!!!!!
