Hello all,
Our incredible department Director of Administration, Kimberly O'Hagan, is
leaving us soon to become an assistant dean for the Social Sciences
Division! We've started a card from grad students to thank Kimberly for
all her help over the years. If you want to sign it, it will be sitting on
the long table in the grad lounge through Tuesday.
Also, last I checked, there were a bunch of leftover desserts from the
department reception yesterday in the department fridge (across from Dan's
office). Please take these if you are on campus and feeling hungry! I
think there were also some leftover pizza slices from an SoHP event in
there, too-- help yourselves!
Best wishes,
Clare

Dear all,
Reminder that we will be having a panel discussion *TODAY, at 4:30 pm in
person in the Grad Lounge, on "Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started
Teaching"!* We'll have some excellent current/former students sharing
their experiences with teaching here (TF appointments for different
lectures, designing your own course, other pedagogical roles like house
advisors and department writing fellow, etc.). This is a great opportunity
for future (and current) TFs to ask questions about what to expect!
Ken will be acquiring snacks for those who come in person. We will also
have a Zoom feed open should anyone wish to attend that way; link here:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84812987616?pwd=bUtLQXh6UzZqbDRrZmRCT0t2bXFWQT09
The normal happy hour will directly follow the panel, OUTSIDE on the front
steps of Robinson!

Hi all!
Please see the following message from Ione Barrows and the GSAS Student
Council:
Hi History department,
The GSAS student center is soliciting feedback from grad students about how
to improve Lehman Hall , and I want to encourage everyone to write in
before the deadline (4/26) with their feedback, especially if you want to
lobby for them to BRING BACK CAFE GATO ROJO!!!!! One of the only places on
campus where you could get a really good cup of coffee (Square One
roasters) for $1, and snacks!!! It was closed in early 2020 for the
pandemic and has not come back yet.
*TL;DR: Proposals to renovate the GSAS Student Center in Lehman Hall are
underway--share your thoughts on how the space can best serve you either at
a listening session (4/26) or over email <https://bit.ly/3M3psA6>.*
Hi, Fellow GSAS Students!
Zac from the GSAS Student Council
<https://engage.gsas.harvard.edu/organization/gsc/> here. Hope you're doing
well as we approach finals!
As many of you know,* Lehman Hall is home to the GSAS Student Center
<https://engage.gsas.harvard.edu/organization/gsasstudentcenter>*. Many of
our activities take place there, and many of the folks who support GSAS
students (including the GSC!) have offices there too.
Unfortunately, the space is not ideal for multiple reasons including issues
of accessibility, and not all GSAS students feel a sense of belonging here.
As such, many people have been working hard to push for Harvard to renovate
the space. Currently, their hard work has paid off, and FAS
has commissioned a* feasibility study to evaluate the space and consider
how it could be renovated*!
Because the Student Center believes* student voices should be central *in
these discussions, they've organized a listening session for GSAS students
to provide input on how the space can best serve us <https://bit.ly/3M3psA6>.
The session will take place over *Zoom *on *Tuesday (4/26) at 7 pm*. If you
can't make it, you can also *email your thoughts to Maryellen Fitzgibbon
<mfitzgib(a)fas.harvard.edu> *before 4/26.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a lot of what you’ve been
telling us happen--just imagine if we could finally make the building
accessible, improve wayfinding and imagery, have better food options, and
have a grad student pub at GSAS, among other things students have been
asking for! As such, we hope you'll take this opportunity to shape how the
GSAS Student Center can best serve you!
Best,
Zachary Lim
Vice President, GSAS Student Council
P.S., If this kind of work appeals to you, we're also still accepting
nominations for Chair of Advocacy and other positions! Details here

Hello historians,
Join us *tomorrow, Friday April 22, at 4:30 pm in the Grad Lounge for a
chat on "Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Teaching"*! We have a truly
expert lineup of panelists -- Claire Adams, Aaron Bekemeyer, Anna Bisikalo,
and Sophie Wilkowske -- who will speak on the highs and lows of teaching at
Harvard. Bring your burning questions about lecture and seminar TF roles,
the thesis writers' seminar, house advising, the HPI, lecturing, and other
pedagogical roles within the department. PhD students in all G-years are
encouraged to attend, but especially G1s and G2s. There will be cookies!
The wonderful Ken Alyass is also planning to set up a Zoom feed so that
folks who can't make it in person can listen in. Link here:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84812987616?pwd=bUtLQXh6UzZqbDRrZmRCT0t2bXFWQT09
After the panel, stick around for the usual happy hour with pizza and
drinks!

Hello from Silicon Valley,
We recently developed an algorithm to estimate a human’s IQ score, from raw
DNA data.
As of now, our error of estimation is around 5%.
It is currently a research project to decrease the error further. Could you
please give it a try so help us improve it?:

We also appreciate it if you please share this email with your
innovator-minded friends and family members.
Thanks,
