Presented by Vikas Khanna, Michelin Starred Indian chef, restaurateur, food
writer, filmmaker, humanitarian and the host of the TV Show MasterChef India
Introduction by Harpreet Singh, College Fellow and member of faculty in the
Department of South Asian Studies, Harvard University
Chair: Ali Asani, Professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and
Cultures, Chair, Deptartment of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations,
and Director, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Islamic Studies Program
The Sikh religion is unique in that its temples supply free food through
their kitchens, known as Langars, to everyone who comes, regardless of
their beliefs. Everyone is welcome and everyone is treated the same. It is
as firm a testament to equality and service as can be seen anywhere in the
world. Each Sikh devotee contributes to the Langar in offering food,
cooking, serving and cleaning. The Langar is their expression of the
fundamental obligations of human beings in this world which is to take care
of one’s fellow man and recognize that they are all equal in the eyes of
God. Dr. Deepak Chopra explains the Sikh concepts of seva, simran and
satsang as they apply to the Langar and Vikas Khanna explores places
significant to the history of Sikhism. The highlight of the film is the
visit to the Langar of Harimandir Sahib, the Golden Temple in Amritsar,
India. This is the busiest kitchen in the world. Many devotees will
describe their personal experience of the Langar.
Featuring: Dr. Deepak Chopra, Mr. and Mrs. Sant Singh Chatwal, Mr. Teji
Bindra, Ms. Aroon Shivdasani, Ms. Vishaka Desai, Mr. Mandeep Sobti, and Her
Highness Preneet Kaur.
