Dear Applicants,
I hope this finds you well in this day before Harvard/Yale, week before Thanksgiving. I know it finds you as a group in many different individual situations.
1) Acceptances. Some of you have been fortunate enough to receive an acceptance already. Many of those schools will ask you to send in a deposit and/or a written notice that you accept the spot. There are clear "traffic rules" that govern acceptances (traffic rules for applicants<https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/applica…>; traffic rules for admissions officers<https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/applica…>). As long as you are holding only one acceptance on April 30th, all of the deposits you have paid will be returned, except for the one at the final school that you plan to attend. As you get a first acceptance, you should withdraw from schools where you do not intend to matriculate. Many of you may need and want to hold on to multiple acceptances until you hear about financial aid offers. That is completely appropriate. For many schools, however, you might know that you will attend school A over school B regardless of what the financial aid package looks like and in that case it is appropriate to withdraw from school B once you have been accepted to school A. Your House tutors and OCS premed advisers are both happy to discuss these choices with you.
2) Interviews. At this point, if you have received zero, one or two interview invitations, please get in touch with your House premed tutor and with OCS if you have not already done so. We believe that roughly 70% of interview invitations have been given out and 30% remain.
3) Sending updates. There are no clear cut rules for sending updates. Some schools ask that you not send them, so do not send them to those schools. Some schools have limits so take that into account. At this point, it is not unreasonable to send updates and letters of interest to schools where you have neither been rejected nor invited for an interview, if you have not done that already. In those emails, be gracious and acknowledge that you realize that not all people are granted interviews, but that you would be honored to receive an interview. You can briefly comment on why you are interested in this school and can briefly give some update if you have something you would like to share. In my experience, it is better to keep these short-6-8 sentences.
4) Waitlists. As soon as you are placed on a wait list, you should let the school know that you appreciate their continued consideration and that you are very interested in remaining on the wait list. Beginning in January, we would recommend more specific strategies for managing wait list including continued updates, but for now, you can sit tight beyond your initial letter.
Stay in touch if we can be of help. Please spread the word about joining this list serve among your fellow Harvard applicants.
With all best wishes,
Ellen and Emiko
Hi all,
We are just writing with a quick reminder about the workshop on Monday, November 7, from 4-5 pm at OCS on Financing Your Medical Education with Stephanie Hunt, Director of Financial Aid at Harvard Medical School. Ms. Hunt will lead a discussion on financial aid options. Her comments will be relevant to all medical schools and all types of applicants, including international students.
For those of you who are not able to attend, Ms. Hunt's slides will be posted shortly on this page http://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/financial-aid, where the comments of Ms. Hunt's predecessor, Bob Coughlin are currently posted.
With all best wishes,
Emiko and Ellen
