Dear 2024 Applicants,
1. Interviews and updating schools. Some of you have not received any interview invitations, and some of you have received several. This is not uncommon, and medical schools will be sending out many more invitations over the coming several months and into the winter and early spring. Also know that it is not unusual to receive a few rejections before receiving any interview invitations. Starting in mid-October - provided you submitted your AMCAS by mid-June, were verified in late June/early July, and turned around secondaries in 10-14 days - you may send updates to the schools you have not heard anything from, especially if you have received 0 to 2 interviews by mid-October. If you were unable to stick to these rough dates for AMCAS and secondary app submission, you should adjust that mid-October guideline accordingly. In those updates to schools, be gracious and acknowledge that you realize that not all applicants are granted interviews, but that you would be honored to receive one. You should briefly (2-3 sentences) comment on why you are interested in this school and if you have anything new to share, you can include this in your update. These should not be long notes, so try to keep it to one page. Regarding update transmission, please review any communication policies in place at the individual schools, as some may prefer updates via a portal, whereas others may instruct you to email updates directly to the school's admissions office.
Here are some additional guidelines about updates:
* There is no clear right answer as to when and whether you update your schools, and many schools and their admissions staff emphasize keeping any updates you send brief and to the point.
* It is fine to send an update to schools that accept them any time you have major news-award of a major fellowship, publication of a paper, a major award, etc.
* The most meaningful updates are going to be to schools where you have not yet been invited to interview.
* If you send updates in mid-to late October or early November, we recommend you wait at least ~6 weeks before sending a second round of updates to schools you have not heard from.
1. If you have questions about updates/letters of interest, please reach out to your House tutors first. If you have additional questions after consulting with them, feel free to reach out to us. Be sure not to send updates to schools that have communicated that they do not accept updates (some schools do not accept updates/letters of interest at all, or only after you have interviewed). Also note if a school has a limited number of updates allowed. You may decide you want to be able to send those updates later in the process more than you want to send them now. If you have 0 to 2 interviews by mid-October, please also get in touch with your House premed tutors and with us (Oona and Rob), if you haven't already. You can reach us at premed(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:premed@fas.harvard.edu> (only the two of us can read emails sent to this address).
1. Confirming completeness. All of you should confirm that your applications are complete at all medical schools where you have not been invited for an interview or rejected. Be sure to check spam filters and be sure that you are checking any email accounts that you have shared with medical schools.
1. Acceptances. A few of you may be fortunate enough to receive an acceptance to medical school on or shortly after October 15 (the earliest date on which a medical school is allowed to issue acceptances). This is not common and most schools do not start sending acceptances out this early. Once you have been accepted, many schools will ask you to send in a deposit and/or a written notice that you accept the spot. There are clear "Application and Acceptance Protocols" that govern acceptances (Application and Acceptance Protocols- Applicants<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__students-2Dresidents.a…>). As long as you have reduced the number of acceptances you are holding to a maximum of three on April 15th and to one acceptance only on April 30th, all of the deposits you have paid will be returned, except for the one you paid to the school you plan to attend. As you get a first acceptance, you should consider withdrawing from schools where you are certain you would not matriculate over the school/s where you hold an acceptance. Many of you may need and want to hold on to multiple acceptances until you hear about financial aid offers. This is completely appropriate. For many schools, however, you might know that you will attend school A over school B regardless of the financial aid package, and in that case it makes sense to withdraw from school B once you have been accepted to school A. You should always communicate a withdrawal of your app in writing (via email is fine), or via the school's portal if they use one and let you communicate your withdrawal there). Your House tutors and the two of us are happy to discuss the decision whether to withdraw from one or more schools with you.
We wish you all the best in this long process!
Oona and Rob
