Dear 2025 cycle applicants,
Congrats on finishing the semester, and best wishes for a fun, productive, and restful summer ahead. To those of you about to graduate, our warmest Congratulations and best wishes for a wonderful and festive Commencement!
The MCS premed and pre-health advising office is now entering a period of six weeks during which our main focus is on supporting the 2025 cycle applicants and any final advising needs for the 2024 matriculants. If you are applying to medical or another health professions school for 2025 matriculation, and have not yet onboarded with our MCS Applicant advising process, note that we will do our best to help you catch up and not miss out on important resources. Please email us at premed(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:premed@fas.harvard.edu> to request the MCS onboarding information.
May 15 – July 30 MCS premed and pre-health advising schedule:
Starting May 15 through the end of June, individual premed and pre-health 30-minute advising appointments are only open to current medical and other health professions school applicants. The MCS premed and pre-health team does this every spring to support current applicant advising needs.
Weekly Medical School Application Q&A Webinars are now underway: 2025 applicants are welcome to join us virtually to ask questions about AMCAS (or any other common apps you may be completing - TMDSAS/AACOMAS/AADSAS/VMCAS/OMSAS) – and other questions about the application process. These application Q&A webinars will be held weekly in May and June on Wednesdays, at varying times: See our web calendar<https://careerservices.fas.harvard.edu/events/?shared_category=pre-med-stud…> for more details.
Many applicants are currently emailing us and asking if we can set up appointments on short notice instead of booking an open slot in Crimson Careers, citing AMCAS submission opening date of 5/28 as the reason for needing an appointment prior to that date. As we go over on the “Completing the AMCAS Application” webinar<https://careerservices.fas.harvard.edu/videos/?shared_category=pre-med-stud…>, we recommend submitting AMCAS and other primary apps by mid-June. You do not need to submit AMCAS on 5/28; submitting within the first couple of weeks of June will ensure that your app is transmitted very early in the process, on or soon after 6/28. Also note that your AMCAS does not need to be transmitted to medical schools on 6/28 when transmission to schools begins. This is just the first date on which AMCAS starts sending apps to schools. If you are still taking or retaking the MCAT, you still want your primary application to arrive at schools by late July-early August (this will ensure that you receive timely evaluation).
July: Current applicants who need advice in July should first turn to your House/Dudley Community premedical tutors, who remain available during the summer to answer questions related to secondary applications, school list, and other questions about your overall application and plans. Also see the Applying to Medical School page<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__harvard-2Dcsm.symplici…> on the MCS website, including our “FAQs for Applicants” (under the AMCAS tab). If you have an urgent question about your application that your Premed Tutors or the AMCAS/other primary application support staff cannot answer, please email premed(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:premed@fas.harvard.edu> and one of us will get back to you within one business day. Regular premed/pre-health advising appointments resume in August.
We will continue to send important updates about the medical school application process via this MCS Applicant listserv<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__harvard-2Dcsm.symplici…> throughout the summer. As a quick reminder, if you are applying to medical school in 2024 for matriculation in 2025, make sure you have reviewed our 2025 application cycle advising onboarding materials. If you need this information, please let us know at premed(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:premed@fas.harvard.edu>.
Good Luck with your applications as the cycle is about to begin!

Attention all: Unique summer 2024 job opportunity
An HMS behavioral neurologist and neuropsychiatrist is looking for a premed student to work this summer under his supervision as a therapeutic companion to a 79-year-old single female architect, a resident of Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard. The patient is recovering from a stroke she suffered last fall. She is now fully independent in basic activities and many instrumental activities, but has not yet regained her joie de vivre and renewed her meaning of life, and her executive function needs improvement. The companion would live in the patient's house and would engage her with outdoor exercise, music and film, fine dining, conversation, entertaining her friends, etc., while helping her build her executive function, stay safe, and practice healthy habits. Two months living in a beautiful place, doing meaningful work, receiving a competitive salary, and being supervised and mentored by a well-known HMS professor.
Sound interesting? Email bfogel(a)bwh.harvard.edu<mailto:bfogel@bwh.harvard.edu> if you would like to know more about the opportunity.

Dear 2024 Applicants,
Many of you will be applying to medical schools that require or recommend the AAMC’s PREview Exam (one of the two Situational Judgment Tests* now in use by US medical schools). Click here for the list of <https://students-residents.aamc.org/aamc-preview/participating-medical-scho…> participating schools.<https://students-residents.aamc.org/aamc-preview/participating-medical-scho…> PREview scores are reported to participating schools and will be visible in your AMCAS application.
If you will be taking this exam, be sure to review the “free advice, strategies, and preparation resources to help you prepare to complete the AAMC PREview exam” available on the AAMC website at https://students-residents.aamc.org/aamc-preview/prepare-aamc-preview-exam. We recommend taking PREview by the end of July, so that your score will be available to participating schools in August.
“The AAMC PREview exam is an opportunity to showcase your potential to develop into a well-rounded doctor” as measured by “the eight pre-professional competencies<https://students-residents.aamc.org/aamc-preview/about-aamc-preview-profess…> and definitions.” Each PREview exam scenario “address[es] one or more of these competencies.”
In addition to sample exam questions, the official examinee guide, and other printed resources<https://students-residents.aamc.org/aamc-preview/prepare-aamc-preview-exam>, the following AAMC PREview Program recordings will help you prepare as well as hear more about what this exam is meant to assess and what participating schools say about it and how they are using it in their admissions process:
* The PREview Test Day Experience Video<https://vimeo.com/712080164>
* PREview™ Nuts-n-Bolts: Scheduling and Taking the AAMC PREview™ Professional Readiness Exam - Feb. 28<https://vimeo.com/803562591> In this interactive webinar, the AAMC PREview team provided students with information about scheduling a testing session, accessing the practice exam and other preparation materials, preparing the workstation, taking the exam, and sharing scores with schools requiring or recommending the exam. Access the recording now!<https://vimeo.com/803562591>
* AAMC PREview™ Exam: An Overview and Q&A with Medical Schools - May 4<https://vimeo.com/712986215> In this interactive webinar (from May 2022), participating medical schools shared expectations for the PREview exam, the benefits of including a PREview score with your medical school application, and what to expect in the coming months as you register and prepare to test. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the AAMC PREview team and admissions representatives from participating medical schools (including Dr. Jennifer Lucero, the Associate Dean of Admissions at UCLA DGSOM). Access the recording now!<https://vimeo.com/712986215>
* PREview Podcast: The popular podcast, All Access, provides listeners a unique view into the medical school admissions world through a series of interviews with key admissions figures from around the country. The host, Christian Essman of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, was kind enough to invite the PREview team to talk about the exam and answer a lot of questions from a test taker’s perspective. The conversation was a lot of fun and is a wonderful way for PREview test takers to learn about the exam. Listen to the PREview team on the All Access podcast<https://case.edu/medicine/md/admission/all-access-med-school-admission-podc…>!
*The other Situational Judgment Test used by some US medical and other health professions schools is Casper, an Acuity Insights assessment exam. A separate email with information about Casper and two other Acuity Insights assessments, Duet and Snapshot, will also be sent out over this list shortly.
Best,
Oona and Rob

Dear 2023 applicants,
As many of you have now or are about to submit your AMCAS/other primaries including TMDSAS, AACOMAS, AADSAS, VMCAS, and OMSAS, you may be getting ready to take Casper and, for some schools, also the other two Altus assessments Snapshot and Duo. Therefore, I wanted to remind you of the following resources and information about the Altus assessment test.
(For AAMC PREview updates and info, see the previous two emails sent to this list with that information. If you will be taking PREview, be sure to view the recordings of the 5/4 and 6/7 AAMC webinars about this exam).
Casper. Many applicants to US medical schools will need to take this online situational judgment test (SJT). You can learn more about CASPer here<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__takecasper.com_about-2…>.
Medical schools using CASPer<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__takecasper.com_schools…> Scroll down at https://takealtus.com/schools-and-programs/ to find the list of participating US schools.
To learn if a school requires just Casper or also asks applicants to complete the Snapshot and Duo assessments, see the medical school's website).
Scheduling your test: Click here<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__takecasper.com_dates-2…> for the schedule of upcoming CASPer tests. Since participating schools use CASPer as a screening tool, it is important to prepare and schedule your test in a timely manner. Although you will see a range of test dates, plan to take yours by early August in order to ensure timely evaluation at all participating medical schools, and particularly at rolling admissions schools where an earlier interview date confers an advantage over later dates.
The Casper webinar for applicants can be viewed here<https://youtu.be/Miq9fobvd0s>.

And here is the info about Casper on the OCS website<https://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/amcas> (overlaps with some of the info above):
Casper (Computer-based assessment for sampling personal characteristics)
At this time, over 30<https://takealtus.com/dates-times/> U.S. medical schools require applicants to do an online situational judgment test (SJT) called Casper as a pre-interview screen. The test presents a scenario which includes an ethical dilemma and then asks applicants to comment on how the individuals in the scenario should proceed. Proponents of the test believe it measures personal traits such as integrity and the ability to reason. If applicants are required to do this, we strongly recommend that they do free online practices (see https://takecasper.com/sample-casper-test/ and http://apetest.com/caspersim/practice-test/ for two examples). The SJT requires timed, rapid typing about specific scenarios, so applicants need to practice that skill if possible. Note: There are on average just 1-2 test dates per month<https://takealtus.com/dates-times/>, so be sure to register ahead of time. Please be sure to review the Casper FAQs<https://takecasper.com/faq/>. We recommend that you aim to take Casper by the end of July, so it does not delay any interview invitations.
Good luck!

Dear 2025 Medical School Applicants,
Welcome to the official start of the Application Cycle! With AMCAS and TMDSAS applications now open for creation, we want to take this moment to wish you all a smooth and successful application process ahead. We know it is long, and together with your Premed Committees and Tutors, we are here to support you over the coming year to help you navigate this next part of your premed to med journey. This is one of our longer emails, so be sure to read all the way to the end not to miss out on MCS, AMCAS, and TMDSAS resources.
4/19 MCS AMCAS & application process webinar: If you didn’t attend live, or had to leave early, here is the link to the recording of our Completing the 2025 AMCAS Application webinar<https://careerservices.fas.harvard.edu/videos/completing-the-amcas-applicat…>. Slides are attached to this email.
Note: The first minute of the webinar was not recorded; the missing minute addressed the first slide, and we reviewed the importance of paying close attention to AMCAS and other primary app platform instructions and policies. Any failure to comply with AAMC, TMDSAS, or AACOMAS policies, including the ones you are asked to review before submitting the app, could result in an investigation; while rare, we have seen instances of technical difficulties with the AMCAS platform result in an investigation by the AAMC when an applicant tried to retract (“unsubmit”) their AMCAS. In the unlikely event you encounter a technical issue within your AMCAS (or other primary) app, don’t try to resolve it on your own but reach out directly to AMCAS/TMDSAS/AACOMAS for assistance.
