Dear Medical School Applicants,
Welcome back to those of you who are still living by the academic calendar!
1. Missing course work. The start of term is a good time (even for you alumni out there) to double check the websites of all the schools on your list and be sure you have in fact met the requirements. There are a few Texas schools that require extra biology; there are some schools that are fussier about the math requirement and the use of AP scores; there are some schools whose English requirements are more stringent than others; there around 20 schools that require statistics; there are around 60 schools that require biochemistry (though the combination of Chem 17/27 covers that almost everywhere); etc. These only matter to you now as an applicant if these schools are on your list. Just know that you can still take courses this fall and the coming spring if you need to. If you are an alum, it is fine to take additional courses wherever you are in the United States. The majority of schools do not accept online courses, so we do not recommend online courses unless you are certain that the school where you are trying to meet that requirement will accept an online course.
1. Interview prep. This is a reminder that you can prepare for interviews in the following ways.
* All Houses offer mock interview prep and you should avail yourself of these resources.
* Go on the OCS website, in the interview section<https://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/interview-stream>, and sign up for Interview Stream using your Harvard.edu address. There is a section specifically for medical school interviews.
* Use the resources on the OCS premed website about interviews<https://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/medical-interview>.
* Come to an interview workshop at OCS which will feature preparation for both traditional interviews and MMI. These are not recorded since they have a largely interactive format. We ask that only current applicants or seniors who will be applying in a future application cycle sign up. Students applying to other health-related schools (e.g., dental and vet) are also welcome and will find the information relevant to interviewing for those schools. Each workshop is limited to 35 participants. PLEASE REGISTER TO ATTEND<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__harvard-2Dcsm.symplici…>.
Here are the remaining dates:
* Tuesday, September 4, 4:30-6pm
* Wednesday, September 5, 7-8:30pm
* Friday, September 21, 4:30-6pm
* Monday, October 1, 4:30-6pm
* This year we are also fortunate to offer mock interviews for LGBTQ applicants with Maya Harary, a 4th year medical student at HMS. At HMS Maya was an executive board member of the LGBTQ student group (LAHMS) and a member of the Dean's Advisory Committee on LGBT Affairs. She also served on the Admissions Committee for two cycles. She is currently applying into residency in Neurosurgery. Strong preference will be given to current medical school applicants. Please book a 30 minute slot through Crimson Careers<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__harvard-2Dcsm.symplici…>.
* Thursday, September 6, 1:30-3:30pm
* Friday, September 7, 1:30-3:30pm
* If you have particular concerns regarding your interviews, especially about a bump in your road or a sensitive situation, feel free to make an appointment with Oona or Emiko.
Be in touch if we can be of help and please stay in close touch with your House tutors.
Best,
Emiko & Oona

Dear Applicants,
1. Secondary applications. We hope this finds you well and that most of you have your secondary applications almost done. If they are piling up, do whatever you can to set aside some time to get them finished quickly. Make sure they are error-free but realize that they are not all going to seem "perfect" or "brilliant." Some schools do screen applicants before sending secondary applications and those schools often send those secondary applications a bit later. The policy for secondary applications for each school can be found on MSAR.
1. Spam filters. Please remember to keep checking your spam filters and make sure that you are checking email every day during the interview season. Every year we hear stories of applicants who miss interview invitations that got lost in spam. Don't let that be you!
1. Interview prep. Some of you have received some interview invitations, but most of you have not. The season is long and invitations continue to be extended into February and early March. Here are some ways you can prepare.
