Dear Advisors,
I wanted to make you aware of a new resource for your students available on the TMDSAS website. The TMDSAS Podcasts are a library of short interviews with various people regarding the application and admissions process. We have reached out to admissions officers at the medical, dental and veterinary schools to offer advice for your students and to TMDSAS staff members who cover important application issues and how to navigate the process and avoid mistakes and problems. The podcast interviews are timely, informative and offer great information to help your students be successful in submitting a great application. Following is a list of The TMDSAS Podcasts already available on our website (www.tmdsas.com<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.tmdsas.com&d=DwMFAg…>):

Over the course of the next weeks and months we will be adding to this library of TMDSAS Podcasts. For example, we are planning a week-long series of podcasts devoted specifically to advice for non-traditional students. There will also be podcasts addressing particular areas of the application such as writing your personal statement, interviewing for success, how the Texas Match process works, and others.
I hope that you will take the opportunity to listen to some of these and, certainly, let your students know that they are available. If you have any suggestions on future podcast topics, please email Enrique Jasso, coordinator of research, advising services, and digital media at TMDSAS, at ejasso(a)tmdsas.com<mailto:ejasso@tmdsas.com>.
Dear 2018 Applicants,
Congratulations to those of you who have just graduated. We are writing to share information about AMCAS submission, transcripts, Harvard Committee letters, secondary applications, selecting schools, and spam filters.
1) AMCAS submission. AMCAS can be submitted starting June 1. We recommend that all applicants submit between June 1 and June 15. This should be the case even if you are taking the MCAT at a later date. You can submit the application with as few as one school selected and can add schools later if your MCAT score will inform your school list. Even though we recommend submitting as early as possible, it will always be better to make sure that your application is error free rather than rushing to submit on a given day, so if you need a few days to proof it and let others proof it, give yourself those days.
2) Transcripts. Transcripts (from Harvard and from every college or university where you have ever taken classes) need to be sent to AMCAS as soon as possible if you have not already done so to be sure that AMCAS has them when they receive your application.
3) Timing of Harvard letters. As long as you have gotten your information to your House by their deadlines, then your Harvard Committee letter with your letters of recommendations will be uploaded and sent to your medical schools by August 15. Medical schools know this is when Harvard letters are submitted and our letters are submitted sooner than many of the letters from our peer institutions. Many medical schools will begin reviewing your application before this date or will put it in a queue once they receive your secondary, so you still need to get your materials in as soon as you can.
4) Secondary applications. Secondary application policies can be found on MSAR on each individual school page. Most schools do not screen applicants before sending secondary applications, but some do. Most schools send you an email invitation to complete their secondaries, but some schools expect you to go onto their websites and download them from application portals. Check your schools on MSAR to know what to expect. Most schools send secondaries after they have received the AMCAS application, which occurs June 30th at the earliest.
5) School selection. If you have any doubt about whether your school list is appropriate for your particular applicant profile, please be sure you have discussed this with your tutors or with one of us at OCS. An inappropriate school list is one of the common reasons applicants have difficulty getting interview invitations or acceptances. One great thing (activities, GPA, MCAT, etc.) does not usually compensate for deficits in other areas. The applicant's profile is viewed as a whole.
6) Spam folders. Please be sure to keep checking your spam folders and to change settings as needed to ensure that interview invitations and secondary invitations are not ignored accidentally.
Good luck getting your AMCAS submitted. Stay in touch if we can be of help.
Best,
Oona, Emiko, and Ellen

Dear Applicants,
AMCAS has recently told us that they want Harvard Summer School Courses taken abroad handled in a different way. This is different from how we have advised students do it in the past, but we have confirmed this with AMCAS via phone and email and are convinced at this point that this is how they want to handle it. Many questions related to the AMCAS application are answered on our website<https://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/amcas>. We are pasting in the FAQ from our website on this issue. Good luck with your AMCAS!
Best,
Oona, Emiko, and Ellen
Q: If I did a Harvard Summer School (HSS) abroad program, do I indicate that this was a study abroad program in AMCAS?
A. Yes. If you took courses abroad through a Harvard Summer School (HSS) program, you must first add a second entry for "Harvard University" in the "Schools attended" section of your AMCAS (in addition to your main entry of your "Harvard University" undergraduate degree program).
In the box called "School Name," in which "Harvard University" appears as an option, please type into the box to add "-Study abroad" so that it will say "Harvard University-Study Abroad."
Next, assign "undergraduate credit," enter the dates of your HSS summer program, and for "Other options," check the box "Study Abroad Program."
When you get to the "TRANSCRIPT REQUEST" page, you will be prompted to answer the question "Does AMCAS require an official transcript from Harvard University-Study Abroad?;" answer "No," and select "Foreign Institution or Study abroad program sponsored by U.S., U.S. territorial or Canadian institution- Credits transferred" as your "Transcript Request Exception Reason."
Next, answer "Yes" to the question "Was credit for Harvard University-Study Abroad transferred to another institution?." As "School where transfer credits appear," select "Harvard University" (which refers to your first entry of "Harvard University" under schools attended, where you recorded your undergraduate degree and major, and for which you should make a transcript request for your Harvard College transcript; your HSS Study Abroad summer course/s appear on this transcript).
Note that courses taken in the summer are entered as part of the upcoming academic year (e.g., a course taken in the summer of 2016 should be entered as part of the 2016-2017 academic year, along with the year in school status (e.g., SO, JR, or SR).
For all Study Abroad-related questions about course work and institutions attended: See the "Foreign Coursework" and other relevant sections of the 2018 AMCAS Instruction Manual<https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fastly.net/production/media/filer_public/8c/…>. If your question is not answered by these instructions, please contact the AMCAS Help Line at 202.828.0600.
Dear Applicants,
We wish you well in this application cycle. Please try to remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Harvard applicants are generally very successful in this process and you can get a great medical education at any medical school in the county.
1) AMCAS. The slides from the AMCAS 2018 presentation are now on our website.<https://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/amcas> Applicants can find useful information in these slides, in the 2018 AMCAS instruction manual<https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fastly.net/production/media/filer_public/8c/…>, and by calling the AMCAS helpline<https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/applying-medica…> for personal, specific questions. The application opened May 2<https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/preparing-med-s…> for applicants to begin working on it. June 1st is the first day the application can be submitted. We recommend all applicants submit their AMCAS applications by mid-June.
2) OCS Medical School Admissions Data book. We recommend that every current applicant have this book to use as he or she makes school selection choices. If you are a current student and do not have one, you can come to OCS and pick one up at the front desk. If you an alum and are not in Cambridge, please send an email to ocsrecep(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:ocsreception@fas.harvard.edu>, providing a mailing address and a staff member will send one to you. Please do not send your requests to us. If you are applying in a future cycle, please wait and obtain a new version later in the summer or next year.
3) MSAR. We strongly recommend that all current applicants subscribe to the current edition of the Medical School Admissions Requirements for $28. The new version is now available here<https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/applying-medica…>.
4) OCS premed summer schedule. We will see students and alumni in June and August in appointments as usual, but will not have drop in hours. In July, OCS advisors throughout the office are asked not to see students so that we can focus on publications, web revision, and program planning for the upcoming school year. Your House premedical tutors are available in July to answer questions related to secondary applications. Our office is not closed, however, and we can see and speak to applicants for urgent issues.
Good luck with finishing up the academic year and with the start of this process!
With all best wishes,
Ellen, Oona, and Emiko
