Dear PRFs,
FYI---there are still spots open for today's Nuts and Bolts Research Paper Clinics, with lots of librarians lined up to help. Please feel free to publicize this!
The original announcement is attached. Sue suggested "Don't miss out! Research Clinics in Lamont, Today and Monday" as a subject line.
Best,
Odile
*What's New?*
Hi there everyone! Lots of exciting (and super helpful) library and
research events coming up. Here's a list with basic descriptions and check
out the rest of the newsletter for more details:
- *Nuts and Bolts Research Paper Clinics*: an opportunity to get
one-on-one help from a research librarian in Lamont for any research
project you have, at any stage of progress.
- *In-House Workshop - Research under a time crunch:* I'll be hosting
one more in-house workshop this semester during reading period to help you
research effectively and ethically under a time crunch while still
producing solid work despite the wonderful world of procrastination. See
below for more details
- *Survey! *I know there have been a ton of surveys already for various
classes, but if you guys could take 2 minutes to answer this brief survey
about your extracurricular research needs, it would greatly help the
library to better serve *you*!
- *A Very Useful Search Tool Tutorial:* In my last newsletter, I sent a
link to the Library of Congress Subject Headings - attached to this
newsletter is a link to a video that will teach you how to use them and how
they can make your life *so much easier*.
And remember, feel free to email me with any research questions if you
can't make it to my weekly office hours!! (gomez01(a)college.harvard.edu)
*Lamont Event: Nuts and Bolts Research Paper Clinics*
These clinics
<https://gm1.ggpht.com/T05pYygHAjFYi-LBB51gMUIbmnLeH8RmaJ0WK1-ex_35LWsGEoDuW…>
are
a fantastic opportunity for you to get one-on-one help from Harvard's
excellent research librarians. They can help you get started, help you
weave magical search term combos to get you exactly the sources you need,
brainstorm what sources will best help you with your particular project,
and more. Clinics are being offered in Lamont B30 from Tuesday, April
27th–Monday, May 4th (see this poster
<https://gm1.ggpht.com/T05pYygHAjFYi-LBB51gMUIbmnLeH8RmaJ0WK1-ex_35LWsGEoDuW…>
for
exact times), and if you want to take advantage of this fantastic
opportunity, you must register through writingprogram.fas.harvard.edu. (You
must register in order to secure a spot!)
*In-House Event: Ethically Efficient Under a Deadline*
On Thursday, April 30th (the *first day of reading period*) from
7:30pm-8:30pm I'll be running a 30-min workshop (plus time for
questions) to give you some basic strategies and tricks of the trade you
need to get your research finished under the end-of-semester time crunch so
you can get to writing the darn paper already. The idea is to give you more
efficient ways to familiarize yourself with your topic area, point you
towards search strategies and source locations that will provide you with
the most applicable material, and find and evaluate sources as quickly as
possible. No more fumbling with clunky keyword combinations and spending
hours trying to find your sources. These are surefire ways to get good
sources, under a deadline, that will produce good work (although I highly
encourage starting your research *now* so that you can find *fantastic* sources
for a *brilliant *paper...)
*Extracurricular Research Survey *
This survey <https://harvard.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_6Q2JO9wMzCuslZX> will
help the library to help you by better understanding your extracurricular
research needs. The *survey
<https://harvard.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_6Q2JO9wMzCuslZX>* is only 5
questions long and will only take a couple minutes. It would be super
helpful if you could fill it out! Thanks, Currier!
*Library of Congress Subject Headings*
Seriously, these things <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fkIMxP6RAM> will
change you life (your research life at the very least). Here's a link
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fkIMxP6RAM> to a screencast I've made to
walk you through the basics!
