The BSC also offers many workshops aimed at thesis writers, including on time management and how to stay accountable. Find a list of their workshops on their website. If you are struggling with a project, consider reaching out to a subject-specific reference librarian. These librarians are well-versed in a field, and can offer advice on how to find new resources and can be helpful to talk to when thinking about your research! You can request a research consult (

) Study Tip of the Week Microfilm What is Microform? Microfilm is a length of film that contains scaled-down reproductions of documents, such as newspapers or magazines. Many of Harvard’s microfilm collections (
https://guides.library.harvard.edu/history/documentary#s-lg-box-6315651
) are contained at Lamont Library, as part of the Government Information/Microforms Collections. This collection, which includes information from the U.S. government, the United Nations, and other foreign governments and non-governmental organizations, can be browsed on HOLLIS. You may need to use microfilm if you're working with sources that are only available on microfilm, and haven't been digitized. Reading microfilm requires a special machine, known as a microfilm reader. Such readers are available on Lamont Level B, in the Multimedia Lab (
https://library.harvard.edu/services-tools/lamont-multimedia-lab
) . If you aren’t familiar with how to use microfilm readers, one of the librarians at the Multimedia Desk will be happy to help you! These media consultants are available Monday through Friday, 9am–10pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10am–10pm. Vocab! You may have heard of different types of microforms, such as microfilm, microfiche, or micro-opaque cards (all of which can be found at the Harvard Library). These three formats differ in the ways that they are stored. Microfilm are stored as reels of film. Microfiche is stored as sheets. Micro-opaque cards (also known as microprint) are stored on cardboard cards. Although micro-opaque cards are generally no longer made, many older collections may be stored on them. ) Black communities see the closing of their schools—schools that are certainly less than perfect but that are theirs—as yet one more in a long line of racist policies. The fight to keep them open is yet another front in the ongoing struggle of black people in America to build successful lives and achieve true self-determination. Eve Ewing knows Chicago Public Schools from the inside: as a student, then a teacher, and now a scholar who studies them. And that perspective has showed her that public schools are not buildings full of failures—they’re an integral part of their neighborhoods, at the heart of their communities, storehouses of history and memory that bring people together. If you or another book talk attendee require disability-related accommodations, please contact Eileen Berger (Access and Disability Services Administrator & Assistant Director of Office of Student Affairs) at ads(a)gse.harvard.edu or call 617-495-5838 prior to the event. The Afterlives of Frankenstein: Extinction, Emergence, and the Haunted Screen Friday, October 26, 2018, 10am – 4pm Thompson Room, Barker Center Register here (
http://mahindrahumanities.fas.harvard.edu/content/afterlives-emfrankenstein…
) Since 1910, when Thomas Edison’s movie studio released a Frankenstein, doing so at a moment when film technology was barely a decade old, Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel has haunted the screen. It has been adapted again and again over the last two centuries, likely because it models for movie-makers their own dream of an animating power that can bring dead matter to life. Commemorating the bicentennial of the novel’s publication, and held in conjunction with a film series running at the Harvard Film Archive in late October, this day-long symposium investigates how and why Shelley’s monster retains this grip on the cinematic imagination. The speakers and their audience will investigate together what the monster’s many afterlives can teach us about the power of the image, about technologies of artificial reproduction, and about cultures’ shifting understandings of the boundaries between life and death. Sunstein Thursday, October 4, 2018, at noon Harvard Law School WCC Milstein West B 1585 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA “Opinions on government policies vary widely. Some people feel passionately about the child obesity epidemic and support government regulation of sugary drinks. Others argue that people should be able to eat and drink whatever they like. Some people are alarmed about climate change and favor aggressive government intervention. Others don’t feel the need for any sort of climate regulation. In The Cost-Benefit Revolution, Cass Sunstein argues our major disagreements really involve facts, not values. It follows that government policy should not be based on public opinion, intuitions, or pressure from interest groups, but on numbers—meaning careful consideration of costs and benefits. Will a policy save one life, or one thousand lives? Will it impose costs on consumers, and if so, will the costs be high or negligible? Will it hurt workers and small businesses, and, if so, precisely how much? As the Obama administration’s “regulatory czar,” Sunstein knows his subject in both theory and practice. Drawing on behavioral economics and his well-known emphasis on “nudging,” he celebrates the cost-benefit revolution in policy making, tracing its defining moments in the Reagan, Clinton, and Obama administrations (and pondering its uncertain future in the Trump administration). He acknowledges that public officials often lack information about costs and benefits, and outlines state-of-the-art techniques for acquiring that information. Policies should make people’s lives better. Quantitative cost-benefit analysis, Sunstein argues, is the best available method for making this happen—even if, in the future, new measures of human well-being, also explored in this book, may be better still.” — MIT Press Min Kahng: From Manga to Musical Wednesday, October 10 Workshop 4:00-5:15 PM, Farkas Hall Lecture 6:00-7:30 PM Join playwright and composer Min Kahng, for a vocal workshop and lecture on his Broadway-style show The Four Immigrants: An American Musical Manga.
