) ** This Week: ------------------------------------------------------------ * Using encyclopedias * Building your bibliography...from other bibliographies! I'll be in the dining hall on Thursday from 8-9pm with candy and handouts. Stop by to learn how I can help you this semester. As always, if you have any research questions, email me any time (gomez01(a)college.harvard.edu (mailto:gomez01@college.harvard.edu) ) and check out our PRF Website (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) for useful links and resources! Tall-ceiling room with large tables for studying Study Space of the Week: Widener Stacks Reading Room: Tucked away next to the Widener stacks, the Stacks Reading Room has been historically hard to find! This large reading room complete with tables outlets and soft seating can be accessed via the 3rd floor of the Widener stacks, by taking the west elevator to the reading room level, or (newly introduced) by walking directly in from the hall by the Harry Widener exhibit! Fill out this survey (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) to suggest your favorite spaces. Quick Tips: Start with Encyclopedias Are you having trouble identifying a good paper topic or struggling to understand a subject? While many people start research with a Wikipedia search, academic encyclopedias provide information about the context surrounding a subject and can be a great launchpad for your paper. In many cases, an academic encyclopedia might actually be more accessible than Wikipedia. You can compare this Wikipedia article on Prospect Theory (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) and Oxford Reference Online's entry on Prospect Theory from the Dictionary of Psychology (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) to see for yourself! In addition to Encyclopedia Britannica (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) , there are hundreds of subject area specialized encyclopedias available through the “Databases (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) ” tab on the Harvard Libraries website. You can also search for encyclopedias in Hollis+ under the term “subject.” Did You Know...? Shadow of a pile of books ...that you can access pre-made bibliographies to help you find sources? For many topic areas, scholars have compiled relevant resources into a list to provide an entry into the subject. You can find these by inputting “Bibliography” into the “Subject” box on an Hollis+ advanced search. For example, you can find Beowulf, and The fight at Finnsburh; a bibliography in Hollis+. (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
282205957UI7%29=Year&Submit=Search&vl%28freeText2%29=&vl%28boolOperator2%29=AND&dum=true&vl%28freeText0%29=monsters) In addition to published bibliographies, the works cited in course syllabi, theses and dissertations (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) , books and articles are also good places to start! You can also search for “Biobibliographies,” which are bibliographies organized around a specific person or a collection of people, such as Asian American Authors. Check out this PRF video (

Witty, honest, and impossible to put down." (Fiction). If you would like to make your own recommendation, fill out this survey (

) is located at 2 Divinity Avenue and houses a phenomenal collection of works on Asia and Asian cultures. This reading room has long tables perfect for working on a project which requires a lot of space. The beautiful chairs and tables make for a wonderful atmosphere.. Quick Tips: Boolean Operators and Truncation With a few simple tricks, you can tailor your searches to get more useful results. If you want to narrow a search with two or more search terms, use the Boolean operator "AND" to connect them. Conversely, "OR"can expand your search by generating results that contain any of your search terms. If you need to filter unwanted results, use "NOT" to eliminate certain terms. You can connect multiple Boolean operators through the use of parentheses. For example, (witches OR wizards OR warlocks) AND (animals NOT cats) only generate results that contain both information about animals and any of the three magic practitioners. Any sources containing information about cats would be excluded. Check out this video (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) to learn more! Did You Know...? Shadow of a pile of books ...that subject headings can also help you tailor your searches? Using Library of Congress Subject Headings (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) (LCSHs) is a simple way to find keywords that you know will be relevant to your area of study. Often common terms you might think of for a basic keyword search simply won't show up in the citation information for a source. Subject Headings are specially categorized terms attached to, or tagged, to each resource. All you have to do is look up the word or term you think you want to use, and the LC Subject Heading files will tell you the term that you should be using instead. This is especially useful if you are researching something where the terms have changed over time. They also provide broader terms if you want to go from a small topic to a larger one and narrower terms for the opposite effect. Plugging these terms into the “subject” field in an advanced search in HOLLIS+ will bring up relevant sources. Check out this video (

http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) is located on the bottom floor of CGIS Knafle and houses the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies Library, the Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan, and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. The Fung Reading Room is a great place to study without distractions, especially since it's a bit removed from campus! Fill out this survey (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) to suggest your favorite spaces. Quick Tips: Use Hollis+ Advanced Search: Instead of typing your query directly into the search toolbar on Hollis+, click on the "Advanced Search" button. Here, you can search byKeyword, Author, Subject Heading, Title, ISBN, and more! You can also limit the results by a date range, source type (from book to film to map), language, and location. By combining increased search specificity with Boolean phrases, which we will cover after Spring Break, you can ensure you get the best results for your paper! You can refine your search results by using the categories on the left hand side of the results as well. Did You Know...? ...HOLLIS+ and Google Scholar use different search algorithms? The HOLLIS tab in HOLLIS+ searches descriptive data, like authors and titles, about books, videos, and other materials owned by the Harvard Library; most distinctly, it searches keywords found in subject headings added by hardworking librarians who have made an effort to sum up what each item is about. Conversely, Google Scholar searches the entire text of numerous articles and some book chapters, but it is not easy to refine by subject. Use Google Scholar when you are looking for a particular phrase rather than surveying items topically. Google Scholar can also be useful for determining the number of times an article has been cited.
