) Study Tip of the Week Numeric Data Research What is numeric data? Summary-Level Data: Summary-level data are published data points—what you would use if you were looking for a quick statistic such as the unemployment rate or a country’s GDP. Micro-Level Data: Micro-level data files are the numerically-coded results of a particular survey or study. The data are in an unanalyzed, raw format of columns and rows. Some raw data files are accompanied by files in SPSS, SAS or other statistical software format for easier use in these packages. Codebooks: Codebooks provide information on the structure, content, and layout of a micro-level data file and the questionnaire, if any, used for the survey or study. More information on research with numeric data can be found at this research guide (

) ! Resources for Numeric Data at Harvard Harvard students have access to great stores of data. Here are a few: * World Development Indicators (

) Study Tip of the Week STEM Writing Are you a STEM major? Writing is an important skill for any field, including the STEM fields. And, like other fields, there are discipline-specific norms when it comes writing STEM papers that students should be aware of. A good first step is to familiarize yourself with examples of good writing in STEM. An easy way to do this is to read journal articles, carefully noting structural and stylistic themes that emerge. For more information on good writing, try contacting the Writing Center (
https://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/
) . Their website also has guides on discipline-specific writing strategies, including this one for writing papers in psychology. (
http://hwpi.harvard.edu/files/hwp/files/bg_psychology.pdf
) Meet the STEM Librarians! The Harvard Library has several librarians who specialize in assisting students and researchers in STEM fields. If you’re looking for a librarian in a particular subject field, please reach out to your PRF to get connected. In this illustrated presentation, Dr. Trevor Bond will discuss the Plateau Peoples' Web Portal (
https://plateauportal.libraries.wsu.edu/
) , “a collaboratively curated and reciprocally managed archive of Plateau cultural materials.” Bond will share the Washington State University Libraries’ method of collaborative curation with Native communities, touch on issues of data sovereignty, and discuss models for the ethical curation of cultural heritage including the adoption of Traditional Knowledge labels. Trevor James Bond is the Co-Director of the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation and the Associate Dean for Digital Initiatives and Special Collections at the Washington State University Libraries. He is currently working on projects funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Mellon Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies. He has presented widely at professional conferences and published articles on collecting and enhancing access to special collections. Trevor received his Master's in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Archives and Preservation Management and a Masters in Ancient History at UCLA. He recently completed his Ph.D. in Public and Western History at WSU. His dissertation titled, “Why should we have to buy our own things back?” The struggle over the Spalding-Allen Collection, explores the Nez Perce Tribe’s successful effort to purchase the earliest documented collection of their material culture from the Ohio Historical Society. He received the Washington State Historical Society’s 2018 Charles Gates Memorial Award for his article Documenting Missionaries and Indians: The Archive of Myron Eells. Read more about Bond’s work on the Plateau Peoples’ Web Portal from the 2018 Radcliffe Symposium, “A More Complete Record: The Case for Archival Partnerships” in the “Why Partner (
