In the coming weeks, we will be featuring short interviews with some of Harvard's many wonderful research librarians! This week, we are featuring Ramona Islam, one of the mentor librarians for the PRF program! Image of Ramona Islam Ramona Islam (reach her at rlislam(a)fas.harvard.edu) What is your area of focus in the library? On what subjects do you offer research consultations? As the liaison for Celtic Languages and Literatures; Folklore and Mythology; Linguistics; South Asian Studies; and for Religion in East, South, and Southeast Asia, I can help you learn how to employ advanced search techniques in HOLLIS+, use a motif index, find the right database(s), and generally plumb Harvard's vast library collections. What is your favorite movie or TV show? I love the movie The Blues Brothers, because of all the great dancing. I also enjoyed the first few seasons of Orphan Black. Can you list a couple of your favorite books? I love Dandelion Wine, by Ray Bradbury and East Lynne, by Mrs. Henry Wood (Ellen Wood) What is your favorite library at Harvard and why? I love Widener the best, probably because I work there and am constantly getting to know it better every day. My favorite thing about Widener is the portrait of Harry in the Memorial Room. What is a fun fact about you that people might not know? For summer work to earn college tuition, I sketched guest portraits at an amusement park. What is one place beyond Harvard Square you would recommend that students visit and why? If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend climbing the tower at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery. On approach, the tower looks like the rook piece in a game of chess, and once you're at the top, you get a birds-eye view of Boston and surrounds. Book of the Week: The book of the week is Remainder (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) by Tom McCarthy. Book cover half full with water. In this experimental absurdist novel, a man who has suffered a mysterious accident and accompanying memory loss attempts to reconstruct the events surrounding the accident using increasingly baroque and violent means. The standardization of loan periods will help to improve the consistency of due dates at libraries across campus. Also beginning on April 1, Harvard Libraries will no longer charge the $0.50 per day standard overdue fines for regular loan items. Fines for long-overdue/lost material and reserve/media/equipment items will remain the same. ) Quick Tips: Research Guides If your project deadline is looming right around the corner and you have no idea where to start, turn to a Research Guide (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) ! Research Guides can quickly direct you to relevant databases or encyclopedias to kickstart and streamline your research process. The guides are broadly organized by library, subject, or type: * Subject: Sort research guides by subject in order to get a sense of the guides that are available in an academic field. For example, if you are taking a class in African and African-American Studies, there are several subject-specific research guides (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) available, including this one on African American women (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) . * * Type: This category allows you to search for research guides by class or by material. For example, if you are enrolled in Psych 18: Abnormal Psychology, you can simply click on the class's research guide (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) to find databases and encyclopedias tailored to your needs. * * Libraries: Here, see different research guides that pertain to the collection of Harvard's various libraries. For example, if you are interested in learning more about the holdings of Schlesinger Library, a good place to start is with one of the library's many research guides, such as this one on LGBTQ-related topics (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) or this one on women in the legal profession (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) . Article of the Week: The article of the week is "The Trauma of Facing Deportation (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) ," (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) by Jeanette Winterson and published in the New Yorker. Two refugee girls lie on beds with feeding tubes in their noses. This long-form article explores uppgivenhetssyndrom, or "resignation syndrome," a condition wrecking havoc on young persons in Sweden whose families are facing deportation. The article sympathetically explores the huge psychological damage done to children and their parents when they are threatened with forced deportation from their homes and and a return to unsafe regions.
