PRF Newsletter: How to Search Smarter
by Alexis Gomez
** This Week: ------------------------------------------------------------ * How to use Boolean phrases and other search strategies * Feedback survey with chips & dip! I'll be in the dining hall on Thursday 7:30-8:30 pm with candy and handouts to answer any questions you might have. If you fill out a feedback survey, you will get Chipotle chips and guacamole! Email me with questions any time (gomez01(a)college.harvard.edu) and check out our Peer Research Fellow website (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) for useful links and resources! Please email me if these hours don't work for you so we can meet at another time! Study Space of the Week: Widener Carrels: If you want a secluded place to study, study carrels are your best bet! Although many are checked out to thesis writers, you can always use them provided you leave if the owner arrives and you don't make a mess. In Pusey, there are many unreserved carrels! If you have a favorite study space, take a picture of yourself in it and I'll post it in the newsletter! Quick Tips: Using Boolean Phrases: Enhance your research using Boolean phrases and other search strategies. AND narrows your search by only displaying sources with both search terms. OR will broaden your search by providing sources that have either term while NOT helps you filter out unwanted results by providing sources with one term, not the other. Truncation allows you to easily search for multiple versions of one word in your search. Instead of searching for “child” OR “children” OR “childhood”, you can use an asterisk to include all variants of a word stem. In this case, you would type child* into the search bar. Did You Know...? ...that the library has video tutorials (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) on search strategies, the collections, and more? There are almost 50 videos online that can help you navigate the library. Topics include accessing the film archives, fair use, and the like! In addition, the PRF program is building a collection of video tutorials on subjects such as using Boolean phrases, using Library of Congress subject headings, and using bio-bibliographies. Feel free to email us suggestions for new videos! Check out the Peer Research Fellow website. (

) for useful links and resources! Study Space of the Week: Cabot Group Study Rooms: Need to brainstorm for a group project? Want a room to study with a group of friends? On the second floor of the Cabot Science Library, there are six Group Study Rooms equipped with large tables, chairs, blackboards, and chalk. They cannot be reserved, so swing by whenever you need a group study space to see if one is available. If you aren't studying in a group, please give the room to someone who is if such a group stops by! Quick Tips: Using existing bibliographies: As you are creating bibliographies for your final projects, don't forget to draw on existing ones! You can check the bibliography of an encyclopedia (or other reference book), journal article, book, thesis, or dissertation for great suggestions. Also, look in Canvas to see if there are any courses about your paper topic. If so, use their syllabus for help! Don't be afraid to ask a research librarian, TF, or professor for assistance. Once you've identified a helpful source, you can use the "Find a Citation (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) " tool on Hollis+ or check JSTOR, Academic Search Premier, Google Scholar, or Web of Science. You can also check discipline specific databases (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) . I would also recommend emailing the author in a pinch! Did You Know...? ...that the library catalogs non-Roman alphabet texts in Roman alphabets? For example, a text in Arabic would be indexed under its Roman phonetic equivalent. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no index in the native alphabet. Different people spell the equivalent in different ways, which can make research challenging. One resource to help you is the Library of Congress Romanization tables (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) . This is a standardized spelling for the majority of texts in Hollis. Some texts predate the tables, so try multiple spellings if you can't find what you need! Book of the Week: The book of the week (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) is The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, by Milan Kundera Fellow Currierite describes The Book of Laughter and Forgetting as "structured unlike any other book out there -- part fiction, part autobiography, part history." ============================================================ Copyright © 2015 Harvard LHOP, All rights reserved. PRF Newsletter!
by Peer Research Fellow
** This Week: How to use PubMed ------------------------------------------------------------ Unfortunately, I will not be hosting our weekly study break this week. For this week only, please email Vegas, another PRF, with any questions you might have (vegaslonglois(a)college.harvard.edu) and check out our Peer Research Fellow website (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) for useful links and resources! Study Space of the Week: Yenching Reading Room: Located in Yenching Library, this reading room has long tables perfect for working on a project which requires a lot of space. The beautiful chairs and tables make for a wonderful atmosphere. If you email me your favorite study space, it might end up in the newsletter! Quick Tips: Using PubMed: PubMed is an index of articles, many of which are free and online. It uses a sophisticated branching search mechanism, which is different from other databases such as Hollis+. Select "MeSH" on the drop-down menu next to the search bar and select your search term from the results. You can then add filters and terms. When you are done, select “Search PubMed.” Don’t use quotations, hyphens, or asterisks. These break the branching search mechanism and give you less results. You can filter results by source type, journal type, free full text, and date once your get the results on the search. Remember to clear your search terms before your next search or they will be carried over! Did You Know...? ...that the library can help you with science research? You can make an appointme (

) nt (

) with a research librarian in your discipline to get advice. There are 15 research guides for "Biological and Chemical Sciences" (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) alone. PubMed and Web of Science are great places to start research but be sure to check out the "Commonly Used Databases" (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) tab on the PRF website for more suggestions! Cabot Library has amazing geological maps and Countway has an incredible anatomy museum as well as other fascinating sources in their " (

) Center for the History of Medicine" collection. (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) Also, be sure to use your professors, TFS and Science Tutors as a resource! Book of the Week: The book of the week (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) is A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. As described by fellow Currierite, A Confederacy of Dunces is " a hysterical Pulitzer Prize-winning misadventure with the world's biggest misanthrope in 1960s New Orleans." Comic courtesy of
