You can also check out books and periodicals about applied math, applied physics, computer science, engineering, material sciences, and the like. Quick Tips: Doing "presearch": Before you engage on a research project, you should do background research to help formulate your question. You can start by looking up your topic in an encyclopedia to understand the basics. Many of the ones the library has are available online, and several are topic specific (e.g. The International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest and The Food Encyclopedia: Over 800 Ingredients, Tools, Techniques and People), which will help you find the relevant information faster. You can also search in HOLLIS+ for literature reviews (use this keyword for "subject") to get an overview of the research that has already been published! Did You Know...? shadow of a stack of books ...that fair use (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) allows you to use copyrighted materials without permission as long as you do so in a transformative manner? Fair use can help you use copyrighted materials in your papers, presentations, and creative projects. According to Justice Souter of the Supreme Court, your use of copyrighted materials must be one that “adds something new, with a further purpose or different character, altering the first with new expression, meaning or message." It can also have a scholarly or non-profit usage. You should be careful about the amount of the source material used, whether you are taking snippets or an entire idea, and your effects on the existing market. If you want to learn more, check out HCL blog postings for Fair Use Week (
