https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) at Harvard invites you to its next event in the Digital Futures Discovery Series focusing on how drones are playing an influential part in the evolution of education. Advanced environmental engineering research using drone technology has informed the state of undergraduate design-focused education at the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Dr. Anas Chalah, Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning, will shed light on how a summer program was designed in summer 2017 to educate high school students on design thinking, systems, and systems control using drones as the main educational tool. ------------------------------------------------------------ Altered Gazes On Exhibit: October 2, 2017 to January 19, 2018 Schlesinger Library Woman's eyes looking over purple background, with text "Altered Gazes" in pink Altered Gazes foregrounds women as creators and consumers of countercultural content. The works presented in Altered Gazes offer a response both to mainstream society and to the male-dominated countercultural spaces in which they were created. Through small-press and self-published materials—from the aforementioned zines and comics to marijuana cookbooks, musical recordings, and sexually explicit magazines and films—women repurpose the styles and subjects of popular culture to express themselves, to comment on gender roles, and to educate their own communities. Although underground comics, X-rated publications, and popular music have often objectified and marginalized female participants, this exhibition highlights instances where women take charge of the gaze, creating culture instead of merely consuming it. ) Study Tip of the Week: ** Using Novel Sources: Film! ------------------------------------------------------------ Oftentimes, we think about library sources as books, journals, or encyclopedias. However, through Harvard you have access to many different types of sources that you can use for academic work (and for fun)! 1. You can always search for DVDs and other video formats on HOLLIS+ (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) . Remember that hope isn't lost if Harvard doesn't own the particular DVD or video you need! You can also use services like BorrowDirect (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) and Interlibrary Loan (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) to access materials held by other institutions. 2. Kanopy (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) is a film streaming service provided by Harvard! You can access all sorts of great movies, from I Am Not Your Negro (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) to 400 Blows (

https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) This page is a great way to start any research involving film. More generally, if you have questions about a particular topic or library, research guides (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) can offer an accessible starting place, no matter what your background is. 4. If you have further questions, you can contact Reed Lowrie (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) , who is the Film Studies research librarian! (He is the author of the research guide in the previous step!) His email is lowrie(a)fas.harvard.edu. ) Study Tip of the Week: ** Evaluating Sources ------------------------------------------------------------ Sometimes, it can be hard to know if a particular source is appropriate for academic use. Here are some tips that you can use to evaluate the quality of potential sources: 1. Check the publication date of the source. If the source was published some time ago, then this might indicate that you would be better off finding sources that are more up-to-date. 2. Research the publisher of a book or journal. For example, you may want to check to see if a book is published by an academic press. 3. Look up the author of a source. See if the author has published other works in this area. Also see if the author has achieved success in their field, for example through awards in their discipline, or by holding editorial positions in academic journals. 4. If you are looking at news sources, there are several sites that can advise you on which news sources are legitimate. For example, check out First Draft News (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) , which has resources on how to spot "fake news." 5. When in doubt, consider asking a professor or teaching fellow. They will likely be well-versed in what sources are considered high-quality in their field. Announcements & Upcoming Events Apply to be a PRF! (Paid Opportunity) Two students sitting at a table.
