The Bauhaus at Home and Abroad: Selections from the Papers of Walter Gropius, Lyonel Feininger, and Andor Weininger Through Friday, May 24 Amy Lowell Room, Houghton Library Though it operated for just fourteen years, from 1919 to 1933, the experimental German design school known as the Bauhaus sparked the most significant design movement of the twentieth century. Ill-fated to coincide with the rise of Nazi Germany, the Bauhaus ideas of form united with function nevertheless endure, informing contemporary approaches to tea kettles, skyscrapers, and everything in between. This exhibit explores the trajectories of three seminal practitioners in the Bauhaus school and their later careers in the United States. It complements the Harvard Art Museums exhibition, The Bauhaus and Harvard (

) Study Tip of the Week The Special Collections Libraries What is a Special Collections Library? Special Collections libraries house valuable or rare items that usually require specialized security or care. For this reason, items in special collections libraries must be read on-site, in a reading room, and cannot be removed from the library’s premises. At Harvard, items in special collections can be found in HOLLIS. In many cases, an item’s HOLLIS record will include a “Finding Aid,” which lists the items in a particular collection in greater detail. Once you find an item that you’re interested in, you will usually need to request the item through HOLLIS. Note that not all items in special collections libraries are stored on-site—meaning that in some cases, it may take a day or two for your item to be available. Examples of Harvard’s Special Collections: * The Ludlow-Santo Domingo Collection (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) at Houghton Library is The Ludlow-Santo Domingo Library is the world’s largest private collection of material on altered states of mind. The 50,000-plus-item collection documents psychoactive drugs and their physical and social effects. * The Harvard Theatre Collection (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) at Houghton Library encompasses documentary material on theater, dance and ballet, and opera. The Yoke of Bondage: Christianity and African Slavery in the United States Through Friday, March 15 Andover-Harvard Theological Library, 2nd floor Most people today assume that Christianity and slavery are incompatible. For most of Christian history, however, the opposite was true. Christians not only owned slaves, but they also argued that slavery was sanctioned by the Bible. This exhibit explores the relationship between Christianity and African slavery in the United States from the late 19th century, when the first antislavery societies were organized, until the onslaught of the Civil War. In sermons, poems, pamphlets, and memoirs, American Christians fought over the meaning of their faith. In contrast to proslavery theologians, who described Christianity as a religion of hierarchy, order, and submission, opponents of slavery — including large numbers of black Christians — argued that the Bible is a story about liberation. "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free," they read in Paul's Letter to the Galatians, "and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." The exhibit is curated by Freshman Seminar 43D: Christianity and Slavery in America, 1619-1865 taught by Professor Catherine Brekus. On display are original materials from the Special Collections of the Andover-Harvard Theological Library, as well as reproductions from materials held at other Harvard libraries.
