) ** This Week: ------------------------------------------------------------ * Researching on a time crunch * Write night * Archives Currier Scrapbook! This week, I'll be in the dining hall on Thursday from 8pm-12am, with pizza, for the PRF semesterly reading period Write Night! Adam and Lindsay will be there from 8-10pm to offer writing assistance. I will be there to provide research assistance. Pizza will be there to help you with brainpower assistance. We will also have handouts available full of tips and tricks for getting research done on a time crunch for all you procrastinators out there. I will also have all of the scrapbook materials available, so bring submissions and paste your items in! Email me with any and all research questions at (gomez01(a)college.harvard.edu (mailto:gomez01@college.harvard.edu) ) and check out our Peer Research Fellow website (

) for useful links and resources! Study Space of the Week: ** Collaborative Learning Space, Widener 240 ------------------------------------------------------------ Located next to the Reference Room on the second floor of Widener (the same floor as the famous Loker Reading Room), this is the perfect place to work on a group research project without disturbing other patrons. The room has lovely views overlooking the lawn in front of Houghton and Lamont libraries, and comes equipped with large-screen monitors which you can connect to your computer to practice presentations! Quick Tips: Finding Online Sources Quickly Don’t have time to head to a library to check something out? Remember that a significant portion of Harvard’s special collections are digitized (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) , that many encyclopedias and journal articles are available online through HOLLIS+ (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) , and that even a significant number of books are available online. Simply check the filter option “available online” on the left-hand side-bar in HOLLIS+ to narrow down those results. For quick access to the online databases and resources Harvard subscribes to, check out the E-Resources page (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) on the Harvard Library Portal. Did You Know...? Shadow of a pile of books ... you can use Research Guid (

) es (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) to find sources quickly? If your project deadline is looming right around the corner and you still have no idea where to start, turn to a Research Guide for quick direction to relevant databases or encyclopedias to kickstart and streamline your research process. Research Guides can be searched for by subject or library. Plus, it's possible that your class has a Research Guide available especially for it! Cover of Songs of the dragons flying to heaven by young jean lee Play of the Week: The play of the week is Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, by Young Jean Lee. This highly-acclaimed play deftly deals with issues of racism, misogyny, and Asian-American identity. If you like Young Jean Lee's work, check out her play, We're Gonna Die, (

) ** This Week: ------------------------------------------------------------ * Harvard Archives Study Break This week, building off of our Special Collections study break last week, we will be learning about the Harvard University Archives and preparing a scrapbook to commemorate this past academic year in Currier House! Join me in the dining hall from 8-9pm on Thursday with additions for the scrapbook (see more details below). Email me with any and all research questions at (gomez01(a)college.harvard.edu (mailto:gomez01@college.harvard.edu) ) and check out our Peer Research Fellow website (

Dark green-walled room with stained glass window and tables/chairs for studying Study Space of the Week: The Spalding Reading Room Located on the second floor of the Loeb Music Building, the Spalding Reading Room is a gorgeous study space which imparts a feeling of serenity thanks to its deep green walls and stained glass windows. Fill out this survey (

) to suggest your favorite spaces. Quick Tips: Identifying Good Scholarly Sources Sometimes it’s hard to determine whether a source is “a good source” or not. Is it relevant? Is it up-to-date? Is it significant in the body of literature it pertains to? One way to find out if a source is a reliable one is to search through course syllabi for relevant topics. Professors have hand-selected various documents, books, and films to teach their classes, so sources referenced on syllabi are likely to be significant or well-respected. Did You Know...? Shadow of a pile of books ...that Harvard offers free accounts for a series of Citation Tools (
http://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f3…
) that help you collect, organize, and manage your sources for any given project? Build your own database of sources that you have used over time, then use a plug-in to automatically insert in-text citations into your Word document. If you have any questions about these tools, feel free to reach out to PRF! Cover of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein Book of the Week: The book of the week (

) for useful links and resources! Tall-ceiling room with large tables for studying Study Space of the Week: The Andover-Harvard Divinity School Library at Harvard Divinity School The trek to the Divinity School is worth it, especially now that the days are getting warmer and sunnier! The Divinity School Library is housed in a gorgeous building next to Andover Hall. Expect sunny, well-lit rooms and leather couches. If you get hungry, you can always pop over to the Rock Cafe in the nearby Rockefeller Hall—another great study space (and, it takes Board Plus)! Fill out this survey (

) to suggest your favorite spaces. Quick Tips: Finding Items at the Special Collections Libraries Save time by using Finding Aids to help pinpoint what items you'll need from a collection! Finding Aids allow you to get a detailed summary of what items are in the collection, as well as how they are organized. At Harvard, the special collections holdings can be arranged differentlydepending on a variety of factors. Some are organized chronologically by year created, and others are organized by type. The Special Collections Libraries operate a little differently from Lamont or Widener. Since items may be stored off-site, it's a good idea to plan your visit ahead of time. You cannot usually take items out of the reading room. Check to see what items are allowed in the reading rooms by going to the websites of individual libraries (many allow you to use your phone to photograph materials). Did You Know...? Shadow of a pile of books ...that you can submit your research papers to DASH – Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard? DASH is an open access repository for scholarly papers at Harvard, and welcomes contributions from all across the university. Because it is open access, papers on DASH can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, without a paywall. Through DASH, students have the opportunity to contribute to the body of scholarship that is freely accessible by anyone in the world, not just those who belong to academic institutions. It's a great way to publicize the research you do, using the skills you can learn by coming to the Special Collection Study Break! DASH is operated by the Office for Scholarly Communication—their office is in room G-20 on the first floor of Widener! Gif of a question mark shaking Book of the Week: The book of the week (

) is The Martian, by Andy Weir (Science Fiction). The Martian is an exciting story of curiosity and survival that takes place roughly 12 light miles away on the red planet Mars. The novel behind the motion picture starring Harvard graduate Matt Damon, this book is a page-turning read that encapsulates the human spirit. Fill out this survey (

) for useful links and resources! Quick Tips: Relax at the Libraries Are you in the middle of midterms, papers, and job applications? Take a few moments to relax while you're working. Here are some suggestions to increase your happiness (and productivity) while working: Study in a new spot such as the beanbag hallway at the Law School Library, the wellness section of theFarnsworth Room in Lamont, or a library café such as the Rock Café at the Divinity School. You can also try the standing desks in Cabot and the Law School Library. You could also take 5 minutes to visit an exhibit in Pusey Library, Countway Medical Library, the Music Library, or the Fine Arts Library to clear your mind! Did You Know...? Shadow of a pile of books ...that you can check out Cooper the therapy dog (

) at Countway Medical School Library? He is a very friendly Shi-tzu. You can play with him for 30 minutes at a time between 9-4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you're at Longwood and need a break, this is a good way to unwind if you like dogs! You can also play games or explore solar systems on the Cabot touch screen table to have fun and relax in the libraries. It's available Mondaythrough Friday from 9-5. If insects are your thing, you can check out a fabuloushissing cockroach collection at the Natural History Museum Library! (I personally find them very cute.) During reading period, be on the lookout for board games in Cabot and Lamont! Tall-ceiling room with large tables for studying Study Space of the Week: Gutman Patio Located on the fourth floor of Gutman Library, the Gutman Patio is a perfect study spot when the weather warms up again later this week! You can in comfy wooden chairs sit outside under the sun It's also furnished with shade umbrellas and picnic benches and provides a wonderful view of the city of Cambridge. Think spring!
