The Afterlives of Frankenstein: Extinction, Emergence, and the Haunted Screen Friday, October 26, 2018, 10am – 4pm Thompson Room, Barker Center Register here (http://mahindrahumanities.fas.harvard.edu/content/afterlives-emfrankenstein…) Since 1910, when Thomas Edison’s movie studio released a Frankenstein, doing so at a moment when film technology was barely a decade old, Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel has haunted the screen. It has been adapted again and again over the last two centuries, likely because it models for movie-makers their own dream of an animating power that can bring dead matter to life. Commemorating the bicentennial of the novel’s publication, and held in conjunction with a film series running at the Harvard Film Archive in late October, this day-long symposium investigates how and why Shelley’s monster retains this grip on the cinematic imagination. The speakers and their audience will investigate together what the monster’s many afterlives can teach us about the power of the image, about technologies of artificial reproduction, and about cultures’ shifting understandings of the boundaries between life and death. Sunstein Thursday, October 4, 2018, at noon Harvard Law School WCC Milstein West B 1585 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA “Opinions on government policies vary widely. Some people feel passionately about the child obesity epidemic and support government regulation of sugary drinks. Others argue that people should be able to eat and drink whatever they like. Some people are alarmed about climate change and favor aggressive government intervention. Others don’t feel the need for any sort of climate regulation. In The Cost-Benefit Revolution, Cass Sunstein argues our major disagreements really involve facts, not values. It follows that government policy should not be based on public opinion, intuitions, or pressure from interest groups, but on numbers—meaning careful consideration of costs and benefits. Will a policy save one life, or one thousand lives? Will it impose costs on consumers, and if so, will the costs be high or negligible? Will it hurt workers and small businesses, and, if so, precisely how much? As the Obama administration’s “regulatory czar,” Sunstein knows his subject in both theory and practice. Drawing on behavioral economics and his well-known emphasis on “nudging,” he celebrates the cost-benefit revolution in policy making, tracing its defining moments in the Reagan, Clinton, and Obama administrations (and pondering its uncertain future in the Trump administration). He acknowledges that public officials often lack information about costs and benefits, and outlines state-of-the-art techniques for acquiring that information. Policies should make people’s lives better. I do research consultations on legal history topics. What is your favorite TV show? Recent favorites: La La Land and Modern Family. All-time favorite: Amadeus and old B&W movies. Can you list a couple of your favorite books? Maria Semple, This One is Mine - funny but with a lot of depth. Liza Dalby, The Tale of Murasaki - amazing blend of fiction, fact, and history. What is your favorite library at Harvard and why? The Law Library, of course! The people, services, collections, and building are great. What is a fun fact about you that people might not know? I dance - I've studied a lot of different types over the years, but tap and modern are my favorites. And I've recently started going to climbing gyms. What is one place beyond Harvard Square you would recommend that students visit and why? I can't get enough of the Boston Public Garden—and it's only three stops away on the Red Line! Interlibrary Loan will get it to you within 1-2 weeks. 3. Harvard Direct and requesting books from the Harvard Offsite Storage will have the requested source delivered to the library of your choice within 1 business day - if you don’t want to go all the way to Countway to check out a book, have it delivered to Widener, and if a book is in the depository, it can be wherever you want it to be in just a day. 4. Scan and Deliver (http://library.harvard.edu/scan-deliver) allows you to request single chapters or articles from books and journals rather than having to check out the entire thing - these are emailed to you directly. The works presented in Altered Gazes offer a response both to mainstream society and to the male-dominated countercultural spaces in which they were created. Through small-press and self-published materials—from the aforementioned zines and comics to marijuana cookbooks, musical recordings, and sexually explicit magazines and films—women repurpose the styles and subjects of popular culture to express themselves, to comment on gender roles, and to educate their own communities. Although underground comics, X-rated publications, and popular music have often objectified and marginalized female participants, this exhibition highlights instances where women take charge of the gaze, creating culture instead of merely consuming it.
