Tip: Find diverse composers!
The Harvard Library offers a variety of services that allow you to discover musicians and
composers from traditionally marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds:
The Composer Diversity Database

lists the websites of various composers and focuses on women and composers of color.
Searches can be limited by genre, demographic group, and location.
RILM Music Encyclopedias

is an international and multilingual collection of current and historical music
encyclopedias published from 1775 to the present. The collection covers popular music and
musical theatre, opera, instruments, blues, gospel, recorded sound, and women composers.

Composing music at Harvard
In addition to academic resources related to musical scores and recordings, the Harvard
Library also offers tools for you to create music!
* Finale or Sibelius: in the Listening Room and in Lamont Media.
* Audio or video editing software: on computers in the SLab/Listening Room and Lamont
Media,
* Recording equipment: Can be borrowed from the Lamont Media Lab and Cabot's
Technology Lending Program.

The Hyperion Shakespeare Company presents an evening of scenes from Twelfth Night,
Othello, Henry IV Part 1, and Sir Thomas More—staged throughout Houghton Library's
galleries. One night only! Admission is free; tickets are not required.
Treading the Borders: Immigration and the American Stage
Special Exhibition Tour and Film Screening

Exhibition Tour, 6:00-6:45 PM:
Much of the richness and vitality of the performing arts in the United States derives from
creative talent originating elsewhere. This exhibition explores how successive waves of
immigration transformed the American stage, highlighting the virtuosity and resilience of
a diverse group of actors, artists, and entertainers from the colonial era to the present
day.
Film Screening, 7:00 PM, Harvard Film Archive: Street Scene (1931)
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Elmer Rice, Street Scene chronicles 24 hours
in a multicultural Hell's Kitchen tenement and the tragic consequences of a secret
affair.
Film Screening admission (cash only): $9 regular admission, $7 non-Harvard students,
Harvard faculty and staff, and seniors. Free for Harvard students.
