Do you enjoy helping others find useful information? Apply for a paid position as a Peer Research Fellow! The Library is seeking one resident from each of the following Houses for a paid position as Peer Research Fellow (PRF) beginning September 2019: * Adams * Cabot * Dunster * Eliot * Mather * Pforzheimer * Quincy * Winthrop The Peer Research Fellows program seeks to bring the library's extensive collections and expertise into students' everyday lives through the PRF, a dedicated student who assists peers with their research. Each PRF will be paired with a Mentor Librarian for six weeks of paid training, during which PRFs will learn in-depth research strategies, meet with speciality librarians, and explore Harvard's many research resources. After training, PRFs will work with their peers an average of five hours per week. Job duties include sending out weekly newsletters to neighborhood House listservs; holding weekly study breaks in neighborhood dining halls to share timely research tips; hosting research-related House events; organizing library tours; being available to fellow students for research questions and consultations; and other responsibilities as assigned. Applicants should have an interest or experience in reaching out to peers and supporting student learning, possess enthusiasm for libraries and research, and exhibit creativity, initiative, and follow-through. The successful candidate should be available through May 2021 or beyond and must be free mornings or afternoons on Fridays during November and December 2019 (for training). If you would like to apply, please send your resume and cover letter to Ramona Crawford, the PRF Program Administrator at libraryprf(a)fas.harvard.edu (mailto:libraryprf@fas.harvard.edu) by April 9, 2019. The Bauhaus at Home and Abroad: Selections from the Papers of Walter Gropius, Lyonel Feininger, and Andor Weininger Through Friday, May 24 Amy Lowell Room, Houghton Library Though it operated for just fourteen years, from 1919 to 1933, the experimental German design school known as the Bauhaus sparked the most significant design movement of the twentieth century. Ill-fated to coincide with the rise of Nazi Germany, the Bauhaus ideas of form united with function nevertheless endure, informing contemporary approaches to tea kettles, skyscrapers, and everything in between. This exhibit explores the trajectories of three seminal practitioners in the Bauhaus school and their later careers in the United States. ) Study Tip of the Week The Special Collections Libraries What is a Special Collections Library? Special Collections libraries house valuable or rare items that usually require specialized security or care. For this reason, items in special collections libraries must be read on-site, in a reading room, and cannot be removed from the library’s premises. At Harvard, items in special collections can be found in HOLLIS. In many cases, an item’s HOLLIS record will include a “Finding Aid,” which lists the items in a particular collection in greater detail. Once you find an item that you’re interested in, you will usually need to request the item through HOLLIS. Note that not all items in special collections libraries are stored on-site—meaning that in some cases, it may take a day or two for your item to be available. Examples of Harvard’s Special Collections: * The Ludlow-Santo Domingo Collection (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) at Houghton Library is The Ludlow-Santo Domingo Library is the world’s largest private collection of material on altered states of mind. The 50,000-plus-item collection documents psychoactive drugs and their physical and social effects. * The Harvard Theatre Collection (
https://harvard.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda0ccd00b6d7270a8c9448f…
) at Houghton Library encompasses documentary material on theater, dance and ballet, and opera. To mark the bicentenary of his birth, this exhibition explores Ruskin’s vision of a better world through original artwork, autograph letters, association copies, and illustrated books, in addition to other primary resources recently donated to Houghton Library by R. Dyke Benjamin, Harvard Class of 1959. The evening will begin with a lecture, "'The Things that Lead to Life': Ruskin the Educator," by Sara Atwood. Following the lecture, join us for a reception and viewing of the exhibition. The Yoke of Bondage: Christianity and African Slavery in the United States Through Friday, March 15 Andover-Harvard Theological Library, 2nd floor Most people today assume that Christianity and slavery are incompatible. For most of Christian history, however, the opposite was true. Christians not only owned slaves, but they also argued that slavery was sanctioned by the Bible. This exhibit explores the relationship between Christianity and African slavery in the United States from the late 19th century, when the first antislavery societies were organized, until the onslaught of the Civil War. In sermons, poems, pamphlets, and memoirs, American Christians fought over the meaning of their faith. In contrast to proslavery theologians, who described Christianity as a religion of hierarchy, order, and submission, opponents of slavery — including large numbers of black Christians — argued that the Bible is a story about liberation. "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free," they read in Paul's Letter to the Galatians, "and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." The exhibit is curated by Freshman Seminar 43D: Christianity and Slavery in America, 1619-1865 taught by Professor Catherine Brekus. On display are original materials from the Special Collections of the Andover-Harvard Theological Library, as well as reproductions from materials held at other Harvard libraries. ) Study Tip of the Week Numeric Data Research What is numeric data? Summary-Level Data: Summary-level data are published data points—what you would use if you were looking for a quick statistic such as the unemployment rate or a country’s GDP. Micro-Level Data: Micro-level data files are the numerically-coded results of a particular survey or study. The data are in an unanalyzed, raw format of columns and rows. Some raw data files are accompanied by files in SPSS, SAS or other statistical software format for easier use in these packages. Codebooks: Codebooks provide information on the structure, content, and layout of a micro-level data file and the questionnaire, if any, used for the survey or study. More information on research with numeric data can be found at this research guide (

) Study Tip of the Week Microfilm What is Microform? Microfilm is a length of film that contains scaled-down reproductions of documents, such as newspapers or magazines. Many of Harvard’s microfilm collections (
https://guides.library.harvard.edu/history/documentary#s-lg-box-6315651
) are contained at Lamont Library, as part of the Government Information/Microforms Collections. This collection, which includes information from the U.S. government, the United Nations, and other foreign governments and non-governmental organizations, can be browsed on HOLLIS. You may need to use microfilm if you're working with sources that are only available on microfilm, and haven't been digitized. Reading microfilm requires a special machine, known as a microfilm reader. Such readers are available on Lamont Level B, in the Multimedia Lab (
https://library.harvard.edu/services-tools/lamont-multimedia-lab
) . If you aren’t familiar with how to use microfilm readers, one of the librarians at the Multimedia Desk will be happy to help you! These media consultants are available Monday through Friday, 9am–10pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10am–10pm. Vocab! You may have heard of different types of microforms, such as microfilm, microfiche, or micro-opaque cards (all of which can be found at the Harvard Library). These three formats differ in the ways that they are stored. Microfilm are stored as reels of film. Microfiche is stored as sheets. Micro-opaque cards (also known as microprint) are stored on cardboard cards. Although micro-opaque cards are generally no longer made, many older collections may be stored on them.
