Hey, Nonresident Tutors,
I wanted to specifically invite you and your friends to the Pfoho Talent Show Friday night. It starts at 9pm in the Pfoho Dining Hall, it is free, and it has been called "the most unexpectedly hilarious show ever." This year's show has all new performers and brand new songs, in addition to a couple old favorites.
This is not your typical talent show. Our students pretend to be middle schoolers putting on a talent show, and Kate Harrington and I pretend to be middle school teachers hosting the show.
There will be music, dancing, and a little angst poetry.
There will be a BRAND NEW Very Special Video Presentation to answer embarrassing middle school questions about sex.
If you're driving, there is free street parking in the Graham and Parks School lots, in addition to free parking at that time at the meters on Mass Ave and Concord Ave.
It is only about an hour long. You will not want to miss it.
cheers,
jamie
Hi Pfoho!
PBHA, in conjunction with Luke Tang's family and friends, is sponsoring a
Winter Clothing Drive in memory of Luke Tang to benefit the Harvard Square
Homeless Shelter. Please see below for more info. You can drop off your
items in a designated box in the dining hall.
Thanks!
Sameer

*In memory of Luke Tang*
*A bed to sleep in, a coat to wear, food to eat -- which could you live
without? This is the question facing hundreds of people in Cambridge each
day.*
This winter, join the Phillips Brooks House (PBH) Center for Public Service
and Engaged Scholarship, Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA), and
Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS) in giving to those experiencing
homelessness. Blankets, coats, hats, gloves, and scarves are crucial as we
brace for the cold. Simple acts of generosity can avoid preventable deaths
from hypothermia and keep our neighbors safe and warm. Will you help us?
*Make a difference, just as Luke did.*
On September 11, Harvard College sophomore Luke Tang passed away. Luke was
not only a brilliant student and extraordinary friend, but also a young man
committed to service. In his time at Harvard, he was a regular volunteer at
the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS) and spent hours with those
experiencing homelessness. In his memory, PBH, PBHA, and HSHS invite you to
join our community, by giving winter essentials to those who need them most.
*You can drop off your items in designated boxes inside or near your house
dining halls. *

Hi Everyone,
Some of you might have seen these “Reading Period Reminders” already in the newsletter for this week, but I wanted to send them out as a regular email as well.
As always, feel free to come by my office near the mailroom any time just to say hi, vent, or take some candy!
1. Stress Management: The next couple of weeks can be a significant "crunch time" in your classes. Make sure to get plenty of sleep, eat well, and balance your studying with other activities; make use of the Pfoho exercise rooms, Spfa, and yoga classes to keep your stress levels manageable.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, please don’t keep it to yourself! My door is always open (email me at pforzheimerhousedean(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:pforzheimerhosuedean@fas.harvard.edu>), and the Pfoho tutors are available to provide support and encouragement. The Bureau of Study Counsel is also an excellent resource for both academic and personal advising; call 617.495.2581 to make an appointment with a Bureau staff member. If you are facing a crisis, remember that University Health Services is open 24/7, and appointments are free and confidential. The 24/7 number for UHS is 617-495-5711. Keep in mind, too, that the Writing Center is available if you are looking for help on term papers: http://writingproject.fas.harvard.edu/pages/resources-students
2. Academic Honesty: This is a good time to check in with your instructors about course-specific expectations on source citation, collaboration, and late work. When you are sleep-deprived, feeling pressured, and down to the wire on a deadline, your judgment may not be at its sharpest. If you find yourself pressured, please set up a meeting with me or your tutors to talk through your options. Remember that the penalty for academic dishonesty is always worse than for turning in an imperfect paper or incomplete problem set. The full College policy on plagiarism, collaboration, and dual submission can be viewed here: http://handbook.fas.harvard.edu/book/academic-integrity
3. Backing up your written work: Remember that it’s not a question of if your hard drive will crash, but when. There’s nothing more frustrating than losing a paper you just put the finishing touches on, and most professors will not accept computer problems as a reason for your missing deadlines, so make sure to back up your work regularly. There are free “cloud” backups such as Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/) that you can use. A good habit is to periodically email yourself a copy of your drafts, so you’ll always have a recent edition available if anything happens.
4. Parties: Although parties are not allowed during reading or exam period, you are free to hold small (<15 people) gatherings in your room as long as they do not make noise or bother others. Please be respectful of your neighbors.
Good luck with your studying, and please don’t hesitate to contact me (pforzheimerhousedean(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:pf-abrd@fas.havard.edu>) if you have any questions or concerns.
Very best,
Brigitte
