Dear all,
Last Thursday, we celebrated the graduation of our wonderful seniors, but even as we did the country was starting to reckon with the tragic, violent death of another Black citizen. Cities across America have been protesting and grieving. Like all of you, we are watching these developments with feelings of helpless anger and sadness.
Many of you will have seen the recent email from Pfoho resident tutor James Ramsey to the house, offering support and a safe space to all of you to express feelings. We are profoundly grateful to him for doing so. This afternoon, other messages have been sent to you by various administrators, including Dean Khurana. In writing now ourselves, we wanted, not to just say how we ourselves are feeling, but, equally important, to acknowledge that some of you are grieving and having feelings that we, who are not people of color, can never fully share.
We wish we could do more than just send an email. We wish we were not scattered across the country, disconnected In a time when our community is already under such strain from months of hunkering down against a global pandemic. We are acutely aware that this global pandemic has also revealed the deep inequities of our society, disproportionately sickening and killing marginalized citizens over more privileged ones.
An email on its own won’t bring about the change our country desperately needs. It won’t heal the deep divisions, or bring justice to George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others who have been victims of racist violence. But our hope is that it will at least remind you all that Pfoho is still here, that we are bearing witness, and that we care deeply about all of you.
We are facing a long summer break now, and an uncertain start to the fall semester, but we are not going anywhere. And with your help, over the coming months, weeks and years, we will continue to strive to realize the values of compassion, kindness, and mutual respect that are the foundation of what makes Pfoho a home for all of us.
With much love to you all,
Anne, John and Monique

*WEEK FOUR CHALLENGE!!: "Strange bedpfellows"*
*For this week's Quarantine Cook-off, we challenge you to create something
using ingredients that don't seem like they would go together, but are
shockingly good! *For example, my grandpa eats his apple pie topped with
cheese... It's actually not too bad! Think it's weird that sour cream is
used in things like coffee cake? Me too! But the results are pretty
heavenly!
*How to enter:*
1. Make anything at all that has ingredients that seem like they would be
weird or disgusting but actually work surprisingly well. This can be
anything! A peanut butter pickle sandwich or even homemade french fries
dipped in ice cream or smoothie! The sky's the limit! If you need some
inspiration, check this page

out!
2. Take a photo of your creation
3. Reply to this email with the photo and recipe by 9pm (Boston time) on

Hi pfriends!!
We had so many delicious entries for Week Three (guilty pleasures,
elevated), but after some pretty intense deliberation among the judges, we
finally have some results!
In first place is incoming sopfomore, Amy Lu, with her amazing summer
fruit galette + pancakes with vegan caramel sauce (medjool dates!). Nice
job, Amy!!
In second place we have incoming sopfomore Swathi Kella, who put a Western
spin on a traditional Indian dessert and made an incredible looking serving
of chocolate galab jamun.
We had a tie for third place, between Rosie Poling's family blueberry
muffins and Angie Diana's super indulgent molten chocolate cakes (also, HBD
to Joel in Cabot!!)
And finally, the judges wanted to award a "best photo" award to Nicole
Ianella (see attached!) for her pfancy p(f)rosciutto and pfig grilled
cheese (which I actually made for lunch yesterday and which was DELICIOUS).
Congrats to everyone who submitted! This cookbook is gonna be awesome!!*
Special shoutout to your Res. Dean Monique and her wife Julia for
submitting possibly the most extra pasta dish I've ever seen, along with
some amazing cream puffs that I can personally vouch for!*
And now....

Hey Pfohomies!
Join me (Makinde promised he would make a guest appearance) in 45 minutes

making puff puff with me you'll need about 45 minutes to an hour for the

Amanda's Puff Puff Recipe
Makes ~40 puffs
- 3.5 cups flour
- 1/2 to 1 cup sugar (I put 1/2 cup-ish of sugar in my puff puff because I
don't like it that sweet, but the sugar fiends out there would probably
like more)
- 1 packet of active dry yeast (2 and 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1/2 tablespoon of salt
- 2 cups warm (not too hot - hot water will kill the yeast!) water (I keep
the temperature of water right before it starts to steam)
- Optional: cinnamon, nutmeg, other heavenly things
- Optional: top with powdered sugar (Not endorsed by Makinde)
1. Mix sugar, yeast, salt, and water together. Let sit for 5 minutes so
that the yeast can activate (don't know if that's the actual term, but
whatever)
2. Add flour to the mixture and combine.
3. Let batter rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
4. Heat up vegetable/ canola oil in a saucepan on medium heat. The width of
the pan does not matter, but there should be at least 2 or 3 inches of oil
in the pan so that the puff puff does not stick to the bottom when it
fries.
5. Get frying! The oil is hot enough if batter you drop into the oil rises
to float on the surface. If batter stays at the bottom of the oil, the oil
is not hot enough. Beware! Oil that is too hot will overcook the outside of
the puff puff but leave the inside undercooked. Ideally, puff puff should
take about two minutes to cook on either side and be golden brown all
around. Roll the puff puff from one side to another to cook it through.
6. Using two ordinary spoons (or your hands like they do in the
motherland!), mold the batter into a ball and drop it into the oil.
7. When the puff puff is cooked through, place it on a bed of paper towels
to drain any excess oil.
8. Enjoy one of the wonders of the world.
In puff puff we trust,
Ama-kinde

Notes from the Allston Burr Assistant Dean, Monique Roy, pforzheimerhousedean(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:pforzheimerhousedean@fas.harvard.edu>:
I hope your final assignments and exams are going well so far. I wanted to send a few updates and reminders - please note that Heather and I are still here and ready/willing to answer any questions you may have, or to talk via phone or zoom if that'd be helpful.
1. Extensions: As I explained in my last email, extensions up through the last day of exam period (Saturday, May 16) can be granted by professors, but any work handed in after May 16 will require Ad Board approval to be accepted by the professor. If you are or have been ill or have been dealing with other stressors which have impacted your ability to complete course assignments or prepare for a final exam and you anticipate needing an extension beyond May 16, please be in touch with me right away so I can walk you through that process. You can email me or you can simply make an appointment with me by choosing a time in my calendar (link below). You do NOT need to have an appointment with HUHS Urgent Care or documentation from them the way you might in another semester. I am here to help you navigate this and together we can quickly determine whether asking for an extension makes sense for you.
2. Academic Resources and Stress Management: It is as important as ever (and perhaps even more so now) to get plenty of sleep, eat well, and balance your studying with other activities. If you are feeling overwhelmed, please reach out. Our Pfoho tutors are available to provide support and encouragement, and Heather and I are always here for you, too - email me at pforzheimerhousedean(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:pforzheimerhousedean@fas.harvard.edu> or Heather at pforz(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:pforz@fas.harvard.edu>.
The Academic Resource Center is an excellent resource for both academic and personal advising, especially when navigating a remote Reading Period and Final Exams; visit their website to learn more: https://academicresourcecenter.harvard.edu/home
The Writing Center is available if you are looking for help with papers and other written assignments: http://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu<http://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/> and here for their online scheduler<https://wcscheduler.fas.harvard.edu/>.
3. HUHS/Urgent Care: Please see here<https://huhs.harvard.edu/about-us/announcements-events/updates-huhs-operati…> for information about the HUHS response to Covid-19 and for updates about HUHS operations and hours. If you are currently on campus, in-person urgent care remains available, 8:00am - 6:00pm, 7 days a week, at Smith Campus Center. Please call HUHS at (617) 495-5711 for guidance BEFORE your visit. For assistance between 6:00 pm - 8:00 am, 7 days a week, please call the nurse advice line at (617) 495-5711.
4. CAMHS/Urgent Care: CAMHS clinicians are working remotely Monday through Friday, 8am to 6pm and after-hours urgent care consultation by phone is available nightly from 6pm to 8am and weekends 24/7 at 617-495-5711. Please be sure to visit the CAMHS website<https://camhs.huhs.harvard.edu/> for up-to-date information. Additionally, for those seeking resiliency tools in stressful and disruptive times, CAMHS psychologist, Tara Cousineau, PhD, offers her "Courage, Presence. Resilience" (CPR) workshop<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__vimeo.com_showcase_694…> in short, 15-minute clips.
5. Academic Honesty: This is a VERY good time to check in with your instructors about course-specific expectations on source citation, collaboration, and late work. When you are sleep-deprived, feeling pressured, and down-to-the-wire on a deadline, your judgment may not be at its sharpest. If you find yourself feeling pressured, please set up a meeting with me or your tutors to talk through your options. Remember that the penalty for academic dishonesty is always worse than for turning in an imperfect paper or incomplete problem set. See the Honor Council's "Top Five Tips"<https://honorcouncil.fas.harvard.edu/honor-councils-top-five-tips> for more ideas. The full College policy on plagiarism, collaboration, and dual submission can be viewed here<http://handbook.fas.harvard.edu/book/academic-integrity>.
6. Backing up your written work: Remember that it's not a question of if your hard drive will crash, but when. There's nothing more frustrating than losing a paper you just put the finishing touches on, and some professors will not accept computer problems as a reason for your missing deadlines, so make sure to back up your work regularly. There are free cloud backups that you can use, including Google Drive (https://www.google.com/drive/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.google.com_drive_&…>) and Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.dropbox.com_&d=DwM…>). A good habit is periodically to email yourself a copy of your drafts, to make sure you'll always have a recent edition available if anything happens.
7. Pfoho ABRD Virtual Office Hours: To schedule a time to talk via phone or Zoom, see Monique's calendar here<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_MR-5Fappointment…> or Heather's calendar here<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__calendar.google.com_ca…> and choose a time that works for you.
We are still rooting for you as you make your way through this last week of the semester!
All best, -Monique

Taking a leave for Fall 2020?? Despite the uncertainty for our Fall Term housing, if you are planning to take a leave of absence, as of now you still need to file a Housing Cancellation form
The deadline to cancel fall 2020 housing is Monday May 18th. More detailed info is available from the DSO page at: https://dso.college.harvard.edu/leaving-and-returning. The cancel form is linked to this page via the Residential Portal link (new) on the left margin. Log in with ID & PIN and navigate to Undergraduate Housing Forms 2019/20. This cancellation deadline applies to all students who will not be living on-campus in the fall. This includes students:
* Taking a leave of absence
* Studying Abroad
* Moving off-campus
* Moving into the Dudley Co-op
You may cancel after May 18th but will accrue late fees that increase as the summer goes on.
Interhouse Transfer Applications for Fall Term 2020, Round 2, are also due by Monday, May 18th.
Although our Fall Term housing is still uncertain, if you are interested in applying to transfer Houses, it's best that you still comply with the guidelines as if all will resume. Sorry we don't know yet for sure.
Complete info about transferring Houses is available here: https://dso.college.harvard.edu/transferring-houses. Applications are via the Residential Portal with the link on this same page. Log in with ID & PIN and navigate to Undergraduate Housing Forms. For this second round for the fall, the number of students who are able to transfer will be limited to the number and types of spaces available in a House. The inter-house transfer meeting will be held in mid-July. Students at a minimum must be in their 2nd term of residency in their assigned House this spring in order to apply to transfer to another House. Any approved inter-house moves will take place at the start of the fall term 2020-21. If the application is successful, you may not remain in your current House. Any questions, contact Sue at swatts(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:swatts@fas.harvard.edu>.
