Hi Everyone!
Marie and I can't wait to welcome many of you back for wintersession next week! To kick it off, we're planning an afternoon outing to Made-By-Me pottery painting studio in our very own Porter Square on Monday afternoon (~2-4pm).
This is the perfect opportunity to make something for that special Valentine, a birthday or thank-you gift, or perhaps something useful for the upcoming semester!
The House will cover the studio fee, paint, and a base pottery budget, and there is no artistic talent necessary (even Kate can paint [😊] )!
If you're interested in joining us, please email me directly with your name and phone number.
Looking forward to it!
Stacy and Marie

**TWO NEW Pfoho Programs This Spring:**
#1) Sign up for Cooking pfor Pfriends! You'll be paired with two other members of the Pfam to plan, cook, and serve dinner for 12 in the Masters' residence. You'll receive access to their great kitchen and a budget to create your meal. All skill levels welcome - we'll mix it so everyone can have a good time. You'll get to bring along two pfriends to join the chefs and Masters for an evening to remember. The dates are: March 23rd, April 6th, and April 13th for dinner to be served at 6:30pm. Sign up here<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__docs.google.com_a_coll…>!
#2) We're piloting a House speeches program this term, and we would love to have you sign-up!
We're calling the program Pfoho Repflections. Here's how it works:
1. Starting on March 10 (Housing Day!), we will debut two speeches every Thursday night in the D-hall at the end of Community Dinner.
2. Your speech can be about anything, but it must be about something personally meaningful to you.
3. The speech must be written and must be under 750 words.
4. You must select a coach/mentor from the House staff (e.g., any resident or non-resident tutor, House Fellow, or other Pforzheimer House Staff member), and work with your coach to polish and practice your speech. You don't need to have a coach to sign up, but by the time the speech is written, you should. Let us know if you need help finding a coach; we're happy to help pair you up! (Be sure to give your coach the letter attached to this email that explains their role, too!) And check out the impressive bios of all our House staff, some of whom are professional public speaking instructors: Res Tutors<http://pfoho.harvard.edu/people/house-roles/resident-tutors>, Non-Res Tutors<http://pfoho.harvard.edu/people/house-roles/non-res-tutors>, House Pfellows<http://pfoho.harvard.edu/people/house-role/house-pfellows>, All House Staff<http://pfoho.harvard.edu/people>.
5. At least one week before your presentation date, you must schedule a time to present your speech to the Repflections Team.
We hope this will provide an opportunity to speak your mind, to deepen relationships between students and House staff, and to build a more robust House community.
We sincerely hope you'll consider helping us make this program a Pfoho tradition for years to come--either by signing up to give a Pfoho Repflection, or by staying for an extra 10 minutes at the end of Thursday night community dinner and cheering on your fellow Pfohosers!

This Week: Polar Bear Facts #1- Why Polar Bears Don't Show Up on Infrared
A polar bear reacts light just like a big pile of snow. It has two layers of fur; an under layer made up of soft, wooly hairs which help to insulate the skin, and a top layer with longer, stiffer hairs (called "guard hairs") which are covered in oil to keep the bottom layer from getting wet. Underneath these hairs, polar bear skin is black. Both of these layers have hairs that are translucent shafts. When sunlight hits the body, the photons of each wavelength ricochet through the hair and scatter, making the animal appear to be covered in white fur. As with snow, translucency is more important for the hair than transparency. If it was transparent you would see right through the fur like glass (all photons would pass through the material) and the bear would appear to be completely black.
There was a theory that the hairs acted like fiber optics, trapping sunlight and funneling the energy through the hairs and heating up the skin. As it turns out a bear's under layer of fur isn't even hollow (although the outer guard hairs are), so this theory has been tossed. Besides, even if this was true it wouldn't be much use to an animal that may spend four or five months at a time in the darkness of the long arctic night.
Instead, the fur functions by scattering infrared wavelengths so that much of the emitted body heat is reflected back to the bear, and the rest is scattered. In an infrared photograph of a polar bear all you see is a small red spot in front of the bear's mouth, heat lost as it breathes.
[cid:image011.png@01D17318.D3A94430]
Some polar bears appear yellow, especially during the summer and in older individuals. This is caused by oxidation within the hairs by sunlight. Bears kept in captivity and housed in freshwater pools rather than saltwater ones sometimes appear green This is from algae in the water that has attached to the fur and discolored it. Since the algae doesn't survive in salt water the bears are treated with either a salt solution or with hydrogen peroxide to return them to their normal white color. A few years ago Pelusa, 23 year-old polar bear in the Mendoza Zoo in Argentina came down with a nasty case of dermatitis. The vet prescribed a treatment which turned the animal bright purple and made her a minor celebrity both in South America and on the net.
I learned this fact from Kevin Slater of Mahoosuc Guide Service on the Pfoho Dogsledding trip last year!
Text from Cat Ferguson, "New Research Reveals How Polar Bears Stay Warm." Inside Science.
