Just a reminder that Monique and I are looking forward to meeting up with as many of you as can make it this evening, 8pm…
Dear all,
I am reaching out to you all, our sophomores, to begin a conversation about how best we can build a better sense of community specifically for all of you this semester.
I would like to start by inviting you all to an open conversation this coming Thursday at 8pm ET, to hear your ideas, and begin to brainstorm a positive path forward. I hope that many of you can join, but for those of you who can’t, we will create other ways for you to be part of the conversation!
https://harvard.zoom.us/j/3799531783<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__harvard.zoom.us_j_3799…>
We sincerely hope that, so far, all of you have felt well supported by your sophomore advisors, have enjoyed the swag and care packages we have been sending you, and have identified some kinds of online house programming that have been enjoyable and social.
Nevertheless, we also realize that you as a cohort did not have a chance to physically settle into the House this year, a fact which likely made it more challenging to get to know one other as a group and to develop a sense of class comradery. We already have plans to do a lot to make up for this when you do return to campus, but right now we want to know: what can we do now? How can we tailor a strand of House life now specifically dedicated to supporting you all?
We hope you will join us on Thursday to share your thoughts about these questions. Look forward to seeing many of you then!
With pflove,
Anne, John Monique, and the whole team

Subject: Change of Grading Basis Deadline Extended to November 16, 2020
To: <pfoho-announce(a)lists.fas.harvard.edu>
Hello Pfoho!
As you have likely heard, the change of grading basis deadline has been
extended until *November 16, 2020 at 11:59PM (EST)*. If you are considering
changing a course from being letter graded to being graded pass/fail, or
vice versa, please see here
<https://registrar.fas.harvard.edu/files/fas-registrar/files/students_change…>
for
more information about the process and how to check on the status of your
request. Read on for specific guidance for both changing a course from
letter graded to pass/fail and from pass/fail to letter graded.
*Going from Letter Graded to Pass/Fail:*
If you are considering taking a class graded pass/fail this semester,
please read below for a list of points to consider as you make your
decision.
*Are you enrolled in at least 1 FAS letter-graded course this semester?*
- In order to meet minimum academic requirements each term, students
need to have a satisfactory grade (C- or above) in at least one letter
graded FAS course each semester (note: failure to meet this minimum
requirement can put students at risk of being withdrawn for two terms).
- It is prudent to have at least 2 letter-graded FAS courses each
semester.
- *If you are a sophomore (or first year student) you are required to
enroll in at least 3 letter graded courses per term. Please plan
accordingly.*
*Are you on track to earn the appropriate number of credits from
letter-graded courses?*
- To graduate, all students need 84 credits (ordinarily 21 regular FAS
courses) through courses in which you receive a satisfactory letter grade
(i.e. C- or above) To be eligible for honors, you will need to have 96
credits (ordinarily 24 regular FAS courses) from courses in which you
receive a satisfactory letter grade i.e. C- or above).
- Cross registered courses and term-time study abroad courses – even
when taken for letter-grades -- ordinarily are not counted towards this
requirement 84/96 credits. (They may only be counted towards this
requirement if used for concentration credit; this requires a form to be
signed by the concentration and submitted to the Registrar’s Office. Please
confirm with your concentration.)
*If you expect this pass/fail course to count for concentration or
secondary credit, keep in mind:*
- Each concentration and secondary has its own requirements for whether
or not Pass/Fail courses can count for concentration/ secondary credit.
Some concentrations/ secondaries have firm rules governing this policy,
while others allow for exceptional circumstances to be considered. Please
confirm directly with your concentration or secondary adviser.
*Make sure this course is not being used to fulfill Foreign Language or
Expos.*
- Foreign Language Requirements and Expos cannot be taken pass/fail.
*If this course is counting for Gen Ed, Distribution, and QRD requirements,
please keep in mind:*
- Students in the Class of 2020 and beyond will graduate under the new
College Gen Ed requirements. You can fulfill one of your four Gen Ed
requirements with a course taken Pass/Fail (or SAT/UNSAT).
- You can take any number of Distribution courses, and the QRD
requirement Pass/Fail, with permission of the instructor. (However, when
the same course(s) are being used to fulfill a concentration or secondary
field requirement, there may be limitations on Pass/Fail options – see
above.)
*Are you taking more than 1 course pass/fail this semester?*
- If you are taking two (and especially 3) courses Pass/Fail in one
term, this may have implications for graduate school or fellowship
applications, or other honors (like PBK, etc.). You may wish to consult
with someone who knows the grad school, fellowship, or honors criteria in
your area of interest.
*Pass-fail and GPA:*
- If you pass a course taken Pass/Fail, this does not affect your GPA;
the course will simply be listed on your transcript, and will count towards
overall graduation requirements (of 128 credits). In order to pass, you
need to earn a D- or above in the course.
- However, please note that a grade of ‘Fail’ in a course taken
Pass/Fail DOES impact the GPA.
*Decided to Take Your Course Pass/Fail?*
If, after reading the above information, you have decided to take a course
graded P/F, please complete a form that Monique and I put together - here
is the link: https://forms.gle/bx6nd5T52MbH8dyg8.
In lieu of a meeting with Monique or me, the form lets you confirm that you
have read and considered the implications of all the above information.
Once you complete the form, and assuming all is in order, Monique will then
approve your request in my.harvard! Please note: we need to have this
entire process completed by *November 16th at 11:59PM* (EST).
*Going From Pass/Fail to Letter Graded:*
To take a course for a letter grade that is graded pass/fail by default
(ex. CS 50) you can follow the steps found here
<https://registrar.fas.harvard.edu/files/fas-registrar/files/students_change…>.
There's no need for you to fill out the Google form mentioned in the
information above. Once your request has been approved by your course
instructor and academic advisor, Monique will finalize the request approval
in my.harvard!
We are, of course, happy to meet if you have questions or concerns or want
to talk through any of the particulars. Here's a link to Monique's calendar
<http://bit.ly/MR_appointments> and my calendar can be found here
<https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0/selfsched?sstoken=UUVjVHBzbEg5TTZX…>
.
Best,
Heather

Anne's Riddle of the Week
Faculty Dean Anne has resurrected the much-loved Riddle of the Week from last spring. It will run through the end of exam period, hopefully as a fun mental break from studies.
This week, to start us off, I offer a riddle that hopefully invites a bit of nostalgic fun, especially to those currently off-campus:
This morning, while walking Piper, our dog, in lovely, unseasonably warm weather, I took the following SEVEN photos of various hidden corners of Harvard Yard and its immediate environs.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/gSiMWvDLapVRxvrC8<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__photos.app.goo.gl_gSiM…>
Here is the simple (or is it?) challenge for all of you: identify these seven photos, either by linking each to the building with which each it is associated, or in some other way!
The first person to correctly identify all the photos by noon on Saturday, Nov. 14th will be crowned Riddle Monarch of the week, and featured, with all due pomp and circumstance, in next week's Newsletter. If no one gets all seven, then the person with the most correct responses will be crowned this week's Riddle Monger. Anyone who gets at least four correct will be included in our prestigious Honorable Mention roll call. And of course, the location of all seven photos will also be revealed in next week's Newsletter.
Email your responses to Anne at aharring(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:aharring@fas.harvard.edu>.
