Dear group, Dear Jerrey
Please find attached an address sheet, please note any corrections and send
them to Marilyn. Jerry: could you create an alias called
aspuru-admin(a)chemistry.harvard.edu, I would love to have that forwarded to
Marilyin's account (levin@chemistry) so that becomes the permanent address
for the admins in my group. Is that possible? That way it can be forwarded
to the current administrator but the contact address is always valid.
Cheers,
Alan

Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, January 31, 2007; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Professor Carole Goble, The University of Manchester, UK
Seminar Title: Sense and Sensibility: Adding Meaning to Metadata for
Manageable Middleware
Abstract: Recent work on a Semantic Open Grid Service Architecture (S-
OGSA) lays the foundation for a systematic yet lightweight approach
to deploying semantics into new and legacy Grid middleware. In this
talk I will share my experiences of applying Semantic Web and
ontology based approaches to represent and classify metadata and
discuss the Semantic Grid using the S-OGSA as an illustration. I’ll
also take the opportunity to voice some concerns and raise some
challenges that we have to overcome, not many of which are technical.
Upcoming IIC seminars
Continue to stay up to date with our IIC Seminar Schedule.

Dear HUCE Faculty and Friends,
There will be many exciting environmental events taking place in
February and throughout the Spring term. I hope to include the details
for these myriad events in my weekly calendar emails, but occasionally
will be sending out additional emails like this one to highlight a
certain opportunity.
The following announcement is for a GIS and Remote Sensing Workshop that
the Center for the Environment is co-sponsoring with the Harvard Center
for Geographical Analysis and the Sigma Xi Harvard Chapter. This free
workshop is aimed at educating anyone interested in the use and
applicability of GIS and Remote Sensing as research tools, with a
special focus on Harvard's capabilities and services. I hope that some
of you are able to take advantage of this opportunity.
Kindly,
Jenny MacGregor
Events and Publications Coordinator
Harvard University Center for the Environment
We have all seen beautiful images of the earth from space, and detailed
photos of cities taken from airplanes. As of today, many different
satellites are orbiting the earth, mounted with diverse sensors.
Countless aircrafts have flown, or can be scheduled to fly, along
designated paths, to take conventional or specialty pictures of the
earth surface. Both space-borne and airborne sensors can cover a wide
range of electromagnetic spectrum, generating enormous amounts of
valuable data. Applications of such remotely sensed data are diverse.
Examples include wild fire monitoring, crops production estimation,
weather forecasting, urban sprawl trend detection, and many more.
Come join us to learn more about GIS and remote sensing technology, and
possible applications to your areas of teaching and research:
- Hear an overview of this dynamic discipline from Professor
John Jensen, Carolina Distinguished Professor;
- See how Harvard faculties and scientists use remote sensing
technology in their research fields, including public health, ecology
and environmental studies, archaeology and history;
- Learn the commonly used remote sensing data types and sources
from a NASA scientist;
- Participate in a discussion on how the Center for Geographic
Analysis may better serve the Harvard user community; and
- Take away reading materials about public and commercial
services on remote sensing data, image analysis software, and consultation.
Mark your calendar -- Friday, February 16, 2007. 1:00-6:00pm, at CGIS
South Building, Rm.010, 1730 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA.

There is an upgrade available for python and for swig and there is an error
in PyQuante.
The upgrade package for python 2.5 is
here<http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.5/Python-2.5.tar.bz2>.
Once you install you'll have to run it as python2.5 instead of just python.
You'll probably want to rebuild your scipy and numpy packages as well. I'll
post the instructions for changing the python command so that it links to
python2.5 rather than python2.4 on the wiki soon.
The update for the swig 1.3.31 is
here.<http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1645&package_id=8156&…>You'll
need this if you upgrade to
python2.5 because the older versions don't work with 2.5. Once you download
the package it has instruction in the tar file that will walk you through
the installation.
In PyQuante, anyone who's receiving the error about 'from numpy import
matrixmultipy, transpose' must change it to 'from Numeric import
matrixmultipy, transpose' It should work then.
Good luck,
James Whitfield

Dear group,
We are gearing up to the next semester and we need to re-start group
meetings periodically. Do you think you will have 'beta'-versions of
your schedules in Google by next week so we can set a time for the first
Hartree-Fock / DFT tutorial? It could be potentially two Thursdays from
now. Does that sound plausible?
Please let me know when your schedules for next semester are updated in
the Wiki. If you don't know if you are taking a certain class, just
block it for a while so we can find a common working time for 9 people.
Remember, scheduling is an NP problem.
Cheers,
A.
PS. I will be away from the 21-28 in Cali, Colombia, Alejandro's land,
available by e-mail. I can Skype you if you want to discuss science.
